Red face Pontiac's new Goals...

We've all heard Bob Lutz mention things about how Pontiac should be following BMWs example, and providing quick luxury cars. I have just one question...

ISNT THIS WHAT CADILLAC IS FOR!?!?!?

Brand marketing sucks.

I agree totally. Let Cthe NEW Caddy take on BMW. CTS is a FANTASTIC start.

Pontiac should be chasing PONTIAC buyers... not BMW buyers.

Thumbs up

Yes, this is something that I still do not understand. Do they really feel that Caddy's image with European luxury buyers is too far down to save? Those people would still buy a Cadillac over a Pontiac any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Why alienate the Pontiac people by going so far upscale?

Would someone please post a link to where GM said that pontaic was going up market to battle sales away from BMW?

What I remember from a year or so ago was a story (Automotive news I think) where someone asked What about the future of "Pontaic driving excitement" now that the Firebird was gone.

The answer I remember was that they wanted pontaic's "driving excitement" image to be one of good handeling and driving cars; like the image BMW's cars have.

This is unlike Pontaic's image today. "Normal cars with lotsa plastic"

Nowhere did I read them say that Pontaic was going to start selling cars in to $40k-$70k segment to steal sales from BMW.

My old memory may rusty, but, until someone shows a link where Pontaic is going to leap frog over Caddy and go up market I think I will trust it.

Personally, I think Caddy's job should be to beat Mercedes. That leaves Pontiac to go after BMW.

And if there's a little overlap between the two, who cares? If it creates great cars from both divisions then I'm all for it.

BMW are luxury cars, but more so they are peformance cars. Caddy does not have a luxury performance image. Pontiac gets it right, and keeps the prices at a respectible level, and you have a GM division with BMW style and peformance at lower prices.

I dont remember anyone saying that Pontiac is going to upscale their cars and copy BMW, I remember hearing things like BMW quality, better prices, better styling.

If you compare BMW to Mercedes (or Lexus if you want a slight downgrade) although they are all luxury cars here, BMW has much more of a sports character & that is what Pontiac is going after.

On the surface, it would seem that should be Cadillac's area, but Cadillac is going upmarket in the Mercedes vein, while Pontiac, (like BMW outside the US) will be more a driver's car than a luxury car.

Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

This is precisely what John Rock, former General Manager of Oldsmobile tried to do with Olds. And we all know what happened there...
