Is Pontiac Vibe a dud so far?
The Vibe is not my thing, but a friend of mine owns one and really likes it...
But I was looking over GM November & Year-to-date sales :
http://media.gm.com/news/releases/021201_sales.html
and Pontiac has sold a total of 34,079 Vibes for the year.... compare that to 33,353 Cadillac CTS's and you have to be a bit concerned about Vibe.
CTS is selling well over projections from what I've read, but you'd expect a much more affordable Pontiac small car to sell FAR FAR more than Cadillac, regardless of how successful CTS has been.
Yet, at the top of the release, GM heralds the success of both the CTS and the Vibe....

One of my friends actually bought one.
She likes the power and handling.
Mind you she drove a 91 Sunbird before this.
0-60 7.6 secs is respectable for that vehicle.
Is the AWD slower than the GT?

While this is not my type of car, I think it is nice looking for what it is, and much nicer looking than it's cousin the Toyota Matrix, IMHO...
Those numbers just seem awfully low for such a car.

I remember hearing rumors of Pontiac considering dropping Sunfire altogether and letting Vibe be it's entry car.... but they might be re-thinking that right now.
Honestly, I have no idea what GM's projections were for Vibe, but it just seems very low to me considering it's price point.
I think since GM split the development costs for the Vibe with Toyota (Matrix), then from a bean-counter stanpoint they are doing well so far.
Its definitely a nice car, but its also one of those cars that hopefully hooks a young person and gains GM a lifetime customer...which is what they wanted.
Sort of ironic they had to rebadge a Toyota in effect to get it though.

From what I read before this car came out , it wasnt intended for higher volume sales . Also , the article said the plant that its built at could handle 80,000 a year , currently anyways . I dont remember if that was just for Pontiac or both Vibe and Matrix combined. FWIW ...Matrix is murdering the Vibe in sales .
My cousin bought a AWD Vibe and LOVES it . For the right person it looks like a very useful car . The interior is really cool too , probably because Toyota designed it

My wife just bought a Vibe on saturday. It's a great car and the interior is very nicely designed. Only thing I don't like about it is that the engines are somewhat weak for my tastes. I wanted her to get the GT that comes with 180hp but only a measly 130tq. Unfortunately the GT model doesn't come with an automatic as an option yet so we had to opt for the base model 130hp and 120tq. They are offering a supercharger now for the base motor but my wife said she thinks the car has enough pep so she didn't feel like getting it =(.
Also from what I have read, the majority of Matrix buyers are mainly 35+ years old to where as the Vibe owners are 20+. Most people are going to sway towards toyota anyway since many don't know the Vibe is the exact same car (even comes with a Toyota oil filter) and feel toyota puts out better quality.
Everyone that I know of that has driven one or owns one absolutley loves it, including my wife. It's far better than the P5 and I think it looks better than the Matrix.
One other quick note is that GM barely advertises the Vibe compared to the Matrix. Toyota is saturating the market with ads.

Too bad that the Viba AWD only gets the Corolla engine, though. It would have been a nice car, otherwise.

Toyota's Corolla & Tacoma are also made there.

Hehehe..
I should have said:
Out of that model, the Matrix is built at CAMI in Ontario, and the Vibe is built at NUMMI.
It's all in the wording, but thanks for the correction.
<edit: missed an 'm' on NUMMI>
