Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
So I put my name down a while back at my local dealer when they got info about ordering and final pricing and stuff. Just got off the phone and apparently they're going to be able to order 5 or 6 of them, for a $2000 deposit. Here the thing, they're going to be adding a "market value" fee to it which they dont even know yet, but the man said its probably going to be 3k. What the hell is wrong with GM, they really need to cut this crap out.

Unfortunately, it's the dealer and GM can't do a whole lot about it.
Simply tell them to "cram it", and find a better dealer.

Or tell them that you are going to buy a Sky at Saturn at MSRP.

Wow. I never really thought of that option.
That is a GREAT idea!!
Re: Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
Blue89Bird: That is the dealership, not GM. The dealership buys the car from GM, and they sell it at their price. That is why it is called "MSRP" (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price). I feel your pain, and it sucks, but it's supply and demand, man. Some short-sighted dealers apparently don't mind scaring off future customers by trying to milk some extra money out of a potentially hot car up front.
As was said, about all you can do is take your business to a different dealer. Just remember that it is the dealer, not GM, who is causing this grief.

Re: Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
yea.. not only do I think the Saturn looks better, but the suppose no haggle at MSRP Saturn deal sounds alot more appealing.. and at $25k, at least it seems on paper to be a good deal (as long as the quality is up there)

How long before release do they usually get ordering and pricing information? Truth be told, I like the looks of the Saturn much better, and the idea of the "no haggle pricing" makes them look even better.
I know its the dealers and not GM, but you would think GM would do something about it after the 04 GTO fiasco
Re: Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
Any new product with this much buzz is going to go through something like this. It should really be expected. That doesn't mean you should pay a "market adjustment"; it just means you'll have to do more work to track down a dealer who will sell it at MSRP or better. Look on the Solstice message boards (I'm sure there are some out there). Typically sales people will post advertising specials or guaranteed pricing for preorders on cars like this. Someone will make you a fair deal.
If you want to be the first on the block with the cool new toy, these are the obstacles you deal with. Or you can wait a few months (or more wisely til this winter) and pick up one for an even better price.

Re: Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
Dealers will charge what they think they can get. It's just that with the GTO, they horribly miscalculated what they could do with the price. Look at the Mustang GT. That's getting some pretty good markups and still selling. If the Solstice generates enough buzz, the dealers will get away with it again.

Re: Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
would a rebate help? how can you justify marking up a car if it has a rebate? Pontiac should put a $500 rebate on all there new cars.
I'd never do business with a dealer that price gouges like that.

Re: Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
We really don't have that market value mark-up crap around here. There are so many auto workers around here that many people can buy cars with the manufacturers discount, so marking them up would just kill sales. Call some dealers in Michigan, around Flint, Saginaw, or maybe even Detroit. Would probably be worth the road trip with the money you might save. Just a thought.

Re: Pontiac is trying to pull a GTO with the Solstice
it might be though..
Say for a $5000 markup
instead you spend the $5000 on:
$800 for roundtrip air ticket in first class for yourself to the out of state "honest" dealer
$500 for a town car to personally pick you, and the "honest" dealer's salesperson up and drive around town
$100 for a good dinner while the both of you fill out the final paperwork
$200 for the bar tab and night entertainment
$150 for a nice hotel room for the night
and that leaves about what, $3200 to transport your car from the out of state dealer to your house? That should be able to get you a prof personal covered car transport, with a good damage insurance.

The only problem with going to Saturn is, since they can't mark the car up they'll bone you twice as hard on the trade in. Unless of course you don't have a trade in.

Hey, you live in NJ....come visit me
I won't mark it up over MSRP, and I'll order you whatever the hell you want. If I got away with not marking any of the 10 Firehawks I sold in 2002, I doubt the owner will force us to mark up a 4 cylinder, $20k car either. Not trying to solicit a sale here, but there are dealers who will deal...I just happen to be one of them
