If you are saying that a possible future GTO may be a gleam in someone's eye, for something down the road - well, I can agree with that.

Honestly, Pontiac is now headed in a completely different direction from my understanding.

I wonder how many millions GM spent to establish Pontiac as "The Excitement Division?" Oh, and remember those Wide Track ads?

Personally I'm not a fan of the G4, G5, G6, G8 G2836598125387 naming structure at all.
(On a similar topic, I don't like Cadillac's new naming structure either.)

American cars need names!
However, with this "renaissance" of Pontiac, I believe new names may be appropriate.

I'm actually looking forward to this happening.
And I'm gonna jump on the Alpha band-wagon for now.

I think GTO is an easy thing to do...it is just a matter of pushing the button. So just because no one is talking anout it now really does not mean much.

I am all for Pontiac having a high tech engine line up. For years they had no V8 except Firebird and did fine (though you do need a V8 halo car or two). I would just rather see HF V6's than 4 cylinders.

No promises on a V6.

Yep.

I'd say GTO is where Camaro was in January-February 2005 just before Wagoner, Lutz, and Welburn secretly gave the go-ahead on moving design forward. A package, plan, and basic styling language worked out.

When the greenlight was given to bring a design together, everything from the design competition to the compromises, to the interior makeup was all done within a period of 6-8 months.

It's taking less than 24 months to create a modified, shortened Zeta structure and get it ready for the production line.

Now. How long would it take if design was being adapted to an existing, unmodified chassis?

Been in this discussion before, so I won't rehash everything or get into yet another debate. But I'd certainly take a wait and see attitude before I write an obituary on the GTO's prospects between now and say...2010. It's very possible you may be surprised.

what's the deal for the Grand Prix/G8? is it a go? or is it up in the air like the GTO?

Hmmmmm....

In Jan - Feb 2005, the GTO was essentially dead, with no sign of life since.
OTOH, although there was still a gag order on the word "Camaro", the design studios were filled with all sorts of Camaro inspiration and work during this time frame. No such thing exists today regarding the GTO.

Well, I see you've finally given up on '08. But even 2010 would seem unrealistic to me, even if Pontiac were actually pursuing another GTO - which right now appears extremely unlikely.

So yes, I would be incredibly surprised.

is that because of an official order, or because nobody in the design studios cares?

I don't know.

When asked the question, some people have told me 'never say never' - not sure of what significance that is, if any....... and I don't want to start any internet rumors.

I understand that a 2+2 coupe is one of the proposals on this new architecture though.

This all blows my mind, a few months ago we're talking new goat and holden based G8/GP whatever it would be called and now it's something comepletely different. My mind is a mess. So is this holden sedan for pontiac dead?
This pontiac renaissance needs to happen fast, too many failed rebirths and new directions have come and gone and look where it is now, besides the solstice what else in the 07 lineup gets your motor going? The coolest pontiacs we got in our showroom are the old goats and ta's the owner's trying to sell.
I don't want to be negative but I'm a frusted Pontiac fan and I've had enough of wait four more years for all this cool stuff and when four years come, something got canned or it's basically the same thing you can get at another gm store.

It sounds to me like this G8/Grand Prix import from Aus may be a stop gap until this new alpha architecture is available. Alternatively, the G8 would be a "halo" or "aspirational" car for the rest of the new Pontiac lineup.

^^^^That's what I'm hoping! If G.M.'s idea is to give Pontiac a line of small 4 cyl. cars to lure in the sport compact buyers, fine. BUT they still need to have AT LEAST ONE rwd v-8 in the line up as the aspirational "halo" model! And frankly I don't much care what they call it, just so long as they have it! So bring on the GTO/GP/G8/Gwhiz, whatever, just bring it!

Does any of this have to do with the new Malibu that is supposed to be the most awesome looking car from Chevy in eons?

I'd almost rather not know the future than get a headach from figuring out the clues!
