It would be great if GM had something to compete with the MazdaSpeed 3 but I'd hope it would be AWD...or at least RWD...FWD just strikes me as being completely *** backwards and retarded when it comes to any sort of performance application
Re: Pontiac needs a car like this.
I used to work as a Mazda technician, and I got to drive the Mazdaspeed 6 a couple times. I wasn't very impressed with it. For some reason, it doesn't make a whole lot of power past 5500 RPM. Torque peaks around 2800 RPM and steadily drops from there. Also, owners have reported a loss of power under hard acceleration - I'm not sure what the cause is, or if they've fixed it, but it was causing 1/4 mile trap speeds around 86 MPH (with a mid-14 sec. E.T.) I won't be expecting much from the MS3.
The biggest piece of trash in Mazda's lineup by far is the RX-8. We used to have at least 3 in the shop at a time, and 95% of the time they had to be pushed into the shop. The rotary engines flood incredibly easy if the engine isn't revved past 4000 RPM and then immediately shut off. The engine bay is really tight, not easy to work in.
The coolest thing I saw at the shop was a red 1995 twin-turbo RX-7 that needed an almost total rebuild, as it had sat in a garage (with no maintenance at all, never started once)since 1996. It had 7000 miles on it, and the owner was going to sell it at an auction. Aside from the mechanical work, all it needed was a fresh paintjob - the roof and spoiler were faded to almost pink.

The Vibe and the Cobalt clone should really be combined into a single line of hot hatches. 3 door and 5 door versions. I don't really think they would even need the sedan or traditional coupe variant because you can get a small coupe or sedan at Chevy.
