Re: From our friends at the Corvette Forum...2008 Corvette powertrain info
The thing came together even quicker than Ford's Project Petunia (Ford GT)! While Ford pulled money from everywhere to create the GT, from auto show budget to R&D on new materials and assembly, Chrysler funded development, and it got to the final approval stage PDQ.
I think Dieter Zetsche himself shelved it before he left as Chrysler's CEO & made CEO of the whole corperation, but it was under the umbrella that Germany wouldn't approve it or saw it as frivolous for where Chrysler is positioned in DaimlerChrysler. If it had been approved, we'd probally be looking at the 2nd year of production coming up.
On the other hand, some version of the Viper based Firepower concept is on track to replace the Crossfire as Chrysler's new "Boutique" car.
Expect it after the new Viper comes out.

While true that I don't think Chrysler was, or is, in a position to market such a car effectively it would still be nice to hear those 4 turbos spool up on the street, under an American name none the less.
