Chinese 4x4 gets zero in safety test

The first Chinese car to be sold in Europe has scored zero — the worst-ever score — in safety tests.

The JiangLing Landwind was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week and is expected to arrive in British showrooms within months. It is already on sale in Holland, Germany and Belgium and has been billed as the vanguard of a new invasion of Chinese vehicles.

The two-ton 4x4 scored zero stars in crash tests last week by the ADAC, the German automobile club, which carries out tests for Euro NCAP. “It had a catastrophic result,” said a spokesman for the ADAC. “In our 20-year history no car has performed as badly.”

Testers calculated that a driver would be unlikely to survive a head-on collision at 40mph, and in a side-on collision at 30mph the driver would suffer severe head and chest injuries due to a lack of side protection.

“This car seems to belong in the 1990s in terms of engineering,”
said Chris Patience, head of technical policy at the AA Motoring Trust. “We will wait for the official Euro NCAP results, but if it really is that bad we hope people will think very carefully before buying this car.”

With an expected £10,000 price tag, the Landwind is designed to rival cars such as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, both about £5,000 more expensive. The Chinese maker plans to sell at least 1,000 models before July 2006

Did you expect anything else?

I find it short of a miracle that their spaceship even made it into orbit, *knock on wood* - because it hasn't landed back home yet...

How can they even allow the company to sell that truck? Isn't there a minimum crash test requirement that must be met? I don't see how any sane person would buy that thing after seeing the crash results: http://landwind.bootnetworks.com/

Damn, the Isuzu Rodeo and F-150 are almost as bad.

*Landwind* ... is there a hidden fart joke in there? And so continues the proud tradition of the Dramatic-lame-Chinese-name.

Mock them at your own risk - just recall how fast the Koreans have advanced, and keep in mind that the best car companies in the world are busy teaching the Chinese how to build cars as I type this.

The people that will buy those are the same ones that drink and drive, street race or don't wear their seatbelts because "it'll never happen to me".

No, it's called China's way to take market share away from the "Cost driven" American market. Just look at the hordes who will buy something for 10% less, even though the quality 50% less.

Although, I would hope American's are smart enough to not "cheap-out" on their vehicles, but time will tell.

its really pretty similar to what the japanese automakers did when they first came. get in as quick as possible, not necessarily with great cars, then go from there... and go fast. (they have the shortest lifecycles for cars)

Well that solves that. Its an under-engineered 91-97 Rodeo

This makes me wonder, how bad did the Yugo score in crash tests when it hit the market??? People bought them cause they were cheap, and ignored why they were cheap.

I dont think safety is a selling point for most peoply personally. It's somewhere near the bottom of the list under how many cupholders the vehicle has. People buying an SUV will automatically assume it's safe, because it's an SUV.

Guaranteed if the "Landwind" came to North America people would buy them up if the price was right. No one has any qualms about buying any other Chinese goods. Buying a vehicle won't be too different for the uneducated consumer (aka, most of the population).

So let me get this straight... the Germans are basically saying the only safe SUV/Truck is made by a German company. And we're surprised by this because, why?
