Nissan stops selling some models- engine fires!!

Nissan stops selling some models because of oil consumption and even some reports of engine fires.

Please don't post recall articles. They aren't welcome here.

Technically, not a recall yet

I see some people mention in the recall threads that some of the recalls reported here "don't really affect anyone here..." or "haven't had any instances of the defect actually occuring" , etc...

This quote outta keep that to a minimum:

There have been about 215 reports of the problem and 17 reports of engine fires, resulting in one minor injury, Nissan said.

Good grief... this is 2006 - a century after the invetion of the internal combustion engine. Why do cars even have problems with the motors anymore? Making 'em too complex or what?

I mean I understand having problems with new technology, but the overall approach for building an engine today doesn't seem so drastically different from 50 years ago that we should still be having the number of qualitycontrol issues and design flaws that we do today....

The article doesn't say, but in California emission states, the Nissan 2.5l I4 is a SULEV engine. Nissan isn't the only company producing these (BMW 325i automatic is one too among many others), but I think they are probably trickier to get right (tight tolerances, no evap emissions, etc.). Not an excuse -- just a possible reason.

Too bad Pontiac isn't as responsible. I have read about several LS2 GTO's with excessive oil consumption trashing engines. Dealers are then blaming owners for not properly maintaining their cars or just claiming abuse. If a car uses 3 quarts of oil in less than 1,000 miles they should not be held responsible for the damage related to this.
