Nissan GT-R base price raised $7000

Nissan had quite the game plan for this car. Leak out inflated performance numbers and do it at a cheaper price than the Corvette Z06. This helped build a frenzy that the GT-R was faster and cheaper. I guess Nissan let a lucky few order the car for the $69k price just to get publicity then raise it $7k a few months later.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/05/n...-nearly-7-000/

Nissan announced today a price increase for the 2009 GT-R, raising the MSRP nearly $7,000 from $69,850 to $76,840. The price for the Premium model has been increased even more, going from $71,900 to $79,090 in one fell swoop. Fortunately, the adjusted prices do not affect customers who placed their orders with dealers before September 5. Nissan cited increased material costs as the reason for the adjustment.

so are the gt-r's that are on the street now 08 or 09's? I could see being able to raise from one year to the next (even chevrolet does it every so often at least a little), but if the ones out are 09's and they are just raising the price of the rest of the 09's sold that seems crazy...

i've actually seen same model years with different prices from chevrolet. Not uncommon to see a vehicle thats been on the lot a few months to have a slightly lower base price than one that just arrived..but we're talking a few hundred dollars, not $7k.

Looks like Nissan wants to get in on some of the price run-up, instead of letting the dealers have it in their "market adjustment" games. Good for them, I say.

Didn't GM also jack up the price of the Z06 by several thousand dollars in its second year? Oh my goodness, those sneakly little bastards did indeed!

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/08/2...-higher-price/

The Corvette Z06 received minor upgrades for the 2007 model year along with a fairly substantial price increase. Where the 2006 Z06 could be had for $65,690, the new model will be starting $4,310 higher at $70,000. What do Vette-o-philes get for those extra dollars? A larger glove box for starters. OnStar is also an option now, along with an enhanced acoustics package that's supposed to keep the interior quiet despite the ferocious 505-hp, 7.0-liter LS7 V8 rumbling between the front tires.
I respect any car company that can create such demand for its products that it can actually raise prices. That's a rare thing in today's market.

I think they knew the demand would be there, and sure its smart of them to take in some of the money that will be gotten on dealer markups, but i still think it was a clear marketing ploy to advertise this car as cheaper than the Z06 to create buzz. Changes in price between model year are one thing, but 3 months after the car initially goes on sale?

Solstice came out at $19,995 for that first year. Nissan Might have been trying to get the press coverage for great bang for the buck.

Also the dollar is weakening against the Yen, I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.

The yen has only really been making gains for 3 weeks after taking a beating since late winter. I don't think 3 weeks of gains is going to warrant a $7k price increase.

You got to look at the longer trend, I'm sure all these companies have some smart economist helping them make these export pricing decisions.

A couple of weeks ago or so, someone brought what he claimed was the first GT-R in the midwest, to a local cruise night. My son overheard him say that he payed $146K.

Ouch... I often wonder if I had that kind of dough laying around would I be that bad (well I say bad).

Then I think about my dream garage;
1966 Shelby GT350
1967-1968 BB Mustang
1970 BB Mach One with a shaker, M4, Grabber Blue, and drag pak.
1989-1993 LX Mustang coupe
2005+ GT(40)
1993 Cobra R
1995 Cobra R
2000 Cobra R
2003 Cobra
2005+ FR500C
2007+ GT500
1971-72 Formula 400
1971-72 Z/28
1971-72 Trans Am
1968-72 BB Corvette
2005+ Z06
1987 GNX
1984-1986 288 GTO
1987-1992 F40
2007+ Porsche GT3

Then I think, yeah if I had the money I'd be one of those morons.

So Car and Driver did a little article about the GT-R and it's actual horsepower. They dynoed an alleged production one that they were given (5th GTR) and the car that was doing the One Lap (4th). They made 420rwhp and 415rwhp respectively, on a Mustang dyno. The 2nd and 3rd GTRs they tested were the slowest, but apparently the first 3 preproduction cars all had evolving computer management which wasn't finalized.

Maybe the extra money is for the extra power?
