Nissan Debuts 2007 Altima Hybrid

The Altima Hybrid features the same four-cylinder engine as the base 2007 Altima, but it’s matched to an electric engine to pump out 198 horsepower. More importantly, the hybrid’s mileage is rated at 41 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. That competes directly with the Camry Hybrid at 40/38 mpg city/highway. The projected range with the Altima Hybrid's 20-gallon tank is 700 miles.

...

... the Altima Hybrid will only be on available in eight states when it goes on sale in early 2007. We just received word from Nissan that there are no plans for expanding beyond California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey where emissions regulations are more stringent than in the rest of the country.

700mi. on one tank is nice. Nissan is smart using a 4 cyl. like Toyota instead of a V6 like Honda.

When does the Hybrid Aura and Fusion come out? This coming summer right?

Does the article mention that Nissan is licensing this technology from Toyota? So in fact, it is using the Camry's system to compete with the Camry.

The 2007 is arriving at dealerships as I write this...you'll probably start to see them on the streets in two to three weeks.

The changes are subtle...not nearly as radical of a change as the it was between the most recent generation and the generation it replaced.

That’s true but that’s not an unusual arrangement - such arrangements have been part of the automotive industry for a long, long, time.

There was no reason for Nissan to spend millions of $$$ (not to mention a lot of time) to develop the technology from scratch…even were Nissan to end up with an arguably “better system” than Toyota chances are they would never make back what they lost in waiting to get it to the market.

Also, Carols Ghosn has made it clear that doesn’t believe in Hybrid technology long term...so, if you really believe that, why spend a bucket-load of money to develop a technology that already exists?

But how much fuel economy would it get if it was a turbo diesel?

Our CVT's are whats going to give our cars great gas mileage. Our new 07' CVT Sentra gets better MPG than the 6 speed. Which is why we are using Toyota's "prooven" Hybrid technology, basically to see how it sells.

Are they licensing the design or just the patents? Apparently Toyota has a lot of key patents in this area, so Ford is paying them even though they designed their own system.
