DETROIT -- The next-generation Ford Explorer Sport Trac will get a V8 engine, Ford Motor Co. COO Jim Padilla said.

The redesigned Sport Trac, Ford's SUV-pickup combo, will go on sale in 2006 after moving to an updated Ford Explorer platform. Ford exhibited a Sport Trac concept with a 4.6-liter V8 at the Detroit auto show.

The concept also hints at a wider, longer production Sport Trac with brawnier styling.

"You can see in that a far stronger, more powerful unit," Padilla said. "It will be a more versatile unit. It will be a more sporty unit. You can see some really high-performance things going with that." -Amy Wilson

I wonder what the output will be. It probably won't put out 300hp like the mustang's 4.6 since that would put it right up there with the truck 5.4, but i would expect something north of 270hp with Tq north of 300lb-ft. Guess we'll find that out in time.

Dodge and Ford will both have V8s in their midsize crew cabs. Nissan & Toyota both have 282-284tq in their midsize trucks.

GM needs to drop a DoD 5.3L V8 in the Colorado. 300HP/335tq will leap frog all of the competition and DoD will give it better milage than the competitions V6's. MY 2007 is probably the earliest this could happen.
