New Tundra unveiled at Chicago.
Re: New Tundra unveiled at Chicago.
The exterior is ok. I think its conservative, probably wont be a make or break point on anyones list. The interior is very car-like, but that'll be fine with a lot of the buyers.
All and all its a nice truck, but unlike in the 80's when US cars were horrid, the new trucks are pretty top-notch (with the current F150 and if we can assume the Silverado will be as nice as the other GMT900s). I wonder if it will be good enough to take away sales from the average Ford/Chevy/Dodge owner?

The profile and rear is ok, but the grille/front is really awkward looking. I don't understand why Toyota doesn't use Forerunner'esk styling ... looks much better than either the Tacoma and Tundra.
Why the different rear door handles ... distracting.
Interior ... odd looking dash.
Looking for to the new Chevy's. The Tahoe looks very nice.

I think the 5.7 in my 99 Tahoe makes about that much hp...........
It looks like a pudgy, estrogen injected Ram, but it'll still sell. There are plenty of folks out there fed up with the big 2.5 quality who will jump ship, at least for a while.

There are a bunch of threads already out there about the Silverado engine line up. I also doubt the Tundra will beat or match the fuel economy of the new 320HP DoD 5.3L.

The interior looks 'odd' to me too. Not cheap, for a full size truck anyway, but just 'odd'. 'odd' looks is one of those factors I've found either grows on me or grows away from me over time so I guess we'll have to see what happens for me and for others who feel the same way.
The exterior looks good to me. The overexagerated grill does remind me of a dodge and kind of annoys me that Toyota seems to trying to immitate some styling factors, but you can also see the similarities is shares with the looks of the Tacoma, so they're trying to keep it 'in the family' but at the same time immitate the 'muscle' look of some of the domestic full sized trucks.
As I've mentioned here before. GM and Ford would do well to immitate many of the Japanese cars on the market, and the Japanese would do well to immitate many of the domestic trucks on the market. Immitating the leader is the easiest way to play catch up. Once you've caught up, then you innovate.
As an interesting side note I believe I recognize that information display (with instant milage listed on it in that particular pic) straight out of the 2006+ Lexus GS. It's the only other car in their lineup that I've seen it on to date.
One thing I have to point out is that it lists a towing capacity of up to 10,000 pounds. If I'm not mistaken that will be flat-out class leading for half ton trucks on the market today, will it not? If anything maybe the 1500HD will outtow it, but that's a 3/4 ton in half ton cladding, really.

Re: New Tundra unveiled at Chicago.
I think the regular Silverado is like 10,400 so it would not be class leading.
I like the side profile of this truck, but something about the interior looks wrong to me. i do not like it at all.
I would nto buy one of these...But if we were talking the Tacoma size truck, I love those trucks.

The ram maxes out at 8850
F150 maxes at 9500
So if that Tundra comes out first before the GMT-900s, it'll be class leading.
IF the 900s increase the 1/2 ton chassis over 10000 pounds (which my guess is they probably will) then they won't be.
Re: New Tundra unveiled at Chicago.
Well in regard to the potential towing capacity improvement between the GMT800 and GMT900 models, I just compared the 06 Tahoe to the 07 and they're both rated identically at 7700 pounds max towing.
That makes me thing that either they did nothing to improve the towing capacity, OR the capacity is transmission-limited on the Tahoe, which means it may change when they go to the 6-speed auto.
Anyone know the towing capacity of the new escalade (since it has the 6-speed auto)? I can't find it.

4.8L and 4.2L will be so close in power you don't really need both, but from what I hear you will get both. A 4.8L with DoD would be perfect for the Colorado and Hummer H3.

at least at the start, as for the tahoe, it will just be a cheapy engine for those LS package people who want a stripper model... so i dont see them spending too much additionally on the silverado's 4.8 engine

Of course when you see manufacturer shots they have them all the way back for front shots and all the way forward for rear legroom shots (or at least as far forwards as they possibly can without showing the seat rails, I'd guess.
