Post New Supra goes V8 - no turbo

Looked at Road&Track yesterday, the info is that Supra will host both a V6 and V8.

Interestingly enough, the upcoming Supra IS based on IS300 platform (contrary to what some were saying), and it's V6 engine is the IS300's 3.2L bored out to 3.5L. The V6 will produce roughly 280 HP, whereas V8 will be around 350.

No mention of turbo. It seems to me this Supra will be more competition for Mustang and fbody than exotics.

(Let's hope those V6 will be easy to turbocharge).

Oh, and the best part is the price - around $30K.

Edit: correction, it is V6, not I6 as I originally wrote.

Thumbs down

I NEVER thought I'd see the day when TOYOTA would have a V8 pony car, and GENERAL MOTORS would not!

That is pretty sad. I wonder if the Mk IV crowd will embrace this new boostless Supra.

It's based on the current 3.2L V6 found in Lexus IS300, but bored out to 3.5L.

Edit: changed I6 to V6.

A V8 Ponycar with Toyota Reliability? I'll settle for that if GM won't make with the goods.

Yes, it is 4.3L found in upscale Lexus models. It is projected to output 350 HP.

Looks like Toyota took over where Fbody left off (kinda). You bet I'm considering it if it's prices around 30K. Mind you, 30K is for I6 model, V8 will be more like 35K or more.

I'm slightly disappointed that there is no turbo V6, like the previous generation. And I surely hope that there will be aftermarket for those 4.3L V8's... ANd I hope it sounds good, too.

You are correct, it's V6, not I6.

How new, I don't know, but the article said that it was based on IS300's engine.

sweet! I have been waiting for them to bring back the supra for some time now, and they have been selling used 97's for 30+K.. if the new ones come out and are still around $30K I will definatly consider it!

i knew this was gonna happen.. the f-body is done, and everyone else celebrates and brings out their pony car equivalents. The F-body was one of few platforms that was a difficult moving target.. Imagine how pissed off Ford would have been if they released a 390HP Cobra only to have GM release a 405HP F-body.. Now, everybody grabs a piece of the market share thats relatively free, and GM has to play catch up again.. Nissan has the 350Z, Toyota will have the Supra, Ford brings out the SC'd Cobra... GM better hope the GTO keeps up.... at this point they have to put a LS6 in it to be a step up from the competition...

As someone said earlier,

A Supra with Z06 Power, and Toyota reliability and resale value?!?!?!?!

I will take mine in yellow please. =)

Wonder how well that v8 holds up to boost.

If it does, can you imagine what people will be doing? But I dont find it hard to image alot of us fbody guys going over with the supra. Then again, a new trend, a v8 supra that sounds good? deep?

Its like you are at the light, and someone pulls up, hears the idle, think's it is a Mustang or Fbody, nope, a damn import having muscle car sound.
