Why do people always think their favorite car company has been copied by another car company but never seem to notice that maybe the opposite happened?

Concept skyline rear = Trademark characteristics of the last several generations of Skyline rear ends + G35

Cobalt rear

So you tell me which came out first... the R32 skyline (1989), and the G35 (2003)... or the Cobalt (2005)?

Its pretty obvious that the Nissan copied the Chevy's rear end.

Well then we could say that the Corvette started the 4 round taillamps etc. Now who is copying who?

I know, because no previous Skyline ever had a tailight arrangement like that.

You're right there... first Vette with four round tail lights was, I believe, 1960, right? First Skyline model with round tail lights was, I believe, 1963.

The Vettes have always to my knowledge been straight all the way across and one single color. The Skyline has had the 'center circle in the middle' and generally been offset from inner light to outerlight.

Much like the Cobalt does for 05... offset with an 'inner circle'... Skyline trademark for decades now.

Those early Skylines sure were ugly though. They weren't even Nissans/Datsuns at the time. Looked like a taxi cab sort of.

They didn't even become the skyline that we know today till the late 80's.

Even right upto the R34, they still looked like a taxi cab (guess the standard variation is actually used for that). All boxy and sedan'ish shaped. Not exactly the kinda shape that screams "FAST" or "Sports car".

Well I think the R32 was just as sporty as the fox body stangs or most other cars of the 80's, minus the 4-door version. I don't know, maybe not... I didn't see too many that were still stock appearance. But you're right, my first ride in a skyline was a cab ride. Talk about being disappointed.

Re: New Nissan GTR (skyline)

Skylines may have been used as cabs but I doubt any GTRs were. GTR is what most people are really talking about when they say Skyline instead of the more mundane base model.

It's like an Evo compared to a Lancer.

threxx: ehhhh, Im pretty sure the bigger outter light, unless it was on an older model, was an R34 thing only. the R32 and 33 had same size circles, and the R32s reverse light was inbetween the two circles.

Not ugly to me, but nothing about them says "Mustang".
