TOKYO — Shiro Nakamura, head of design at Nissan Motor, says the company's breathtaking GT-R Proto concept, unveiled Wednesday at the auto show here, is "80 to 90 percent" close to the vehicle design that will be produced in 2007.
While the nose of the GT-R Proto is more conceptual in nature, Nakamura said the car's greenhouse, side profile and rear end, especially the retro-style round taillamps, are "very close" to the final design.
Carlos Tavares, Nissan's executive vice president of product planning, wouldn't reveal many more details of the next-generation GT-R.
"There are a lot of expectations," he said. "We don't want to disappoint our fans."
Tavares no doubt was referring to the hordes of enthusiasts who've begged Nissan over the years to market its legendary Skyline GT-R away from home. The new GT-R will be the first in the series to be exported to other markets. The car will be launched in Japan and will go on sale soon afterward in Europe and North America, Tavares said.
The GT-R will have the same powertrain in all markets, he said. Sources tell Inside Line that Nissan is considering a twin-turbocharged, 3.7-liter V6 that produces about 450 horsepower and drives all four wheels through a seven-speed sequential gearbox.
The production version of the GT-R is expected to debut at the 2007 Tokyo show.

Re: New Nissan GTR (skyline)
i must say it has one of the oddest looking roofline to cpillar ive ever seen. Seems to have the what i call "depressed whale" look its front. the back definately has g35 design put into it, then again over here the g35 is the current skyline. besides that and its taillights i really dont see much skyline in it... at all.
Re: New Nissan GTR (skyline)
I really like the basic profile and rear end treatment. I'm assuming it is indeed G35/350Z based as it sure looks it. More real *** sport cars is a good thing. Wonder what the weight will be w/ the AWD.
Re: New Nissan GTR (skyline)
EFF the new Skyline......Bring the R-32 thru R-34 bodys styles with the Twin Turbo I6 to America and sell it for a preice that everyone could buy one at....maybe 25K-40k...THEN AND ONLY THEN would i be happy....the new "Proto" sucks *****...

I would think that most of those "enthusiasts" (read: 20-something ricers) will never be able to get near one with a sticker that will surely be higher than the new Z06. Oh well, just another would-be Japanese competitor for the Corvette to stomp out.

Not horribly bad, but why does every car manufacturer have to make the headlights look like they flew all the way down the hood. Absolutely ghastly in that respect, imo.
Re: New Nissan GTR (skyline)
I don't care for it that much. I loved the last generation GT-R's. I always said that if I had to pick one performance import, it'd be the Skyline.
(I'm talking about the one like in Fast and Furious)

Re: New Nissan GTR (skyline)
I personally like the looks except for the nose.
Price north of 70k is too damn high imo. That's not only higher than the 505hp z06, that ventures into M5 and 911 carrerra territory.
Nissan needs to find away to being costs down to around 50k without giving up on the performance.
