Thats BS! Either everyone has to play ball, or you give a 400,000 vehicle exemption to EVERYBODY, foreign or domestic. You get 400,000 that don't count, and everything else gets 35mpg average.

Total BS!!

There's a big difference between the type of volume that BMW/Daimler sale here, and what Ferrari or other niche makers do.

That's weak. How about a sliding scale where more expensive cars have less and less stringent regulations? As price rises, volume (and therefore environmental impact) falls anyway.

Where it is complete bunk is where BMW can sell a 3-series or MB can sell its C-class without the same (expensive) standards that are applied to a Cadillac CTS.

Government should stay out of fuel economy regulation.

Of course, they should also stay out of, like, 95% of the crap they're playing in.

Barring that, though, there should be a level playing field. This is frigging ridiculous.

Exactly! The fact that certain companies can't meet the standards, yet still make plenty of money selling cars in the U.S. just proves how silly these regulations are. Why won't the government allow real market forces dictate fuel economy of vehicles?

The article states that it's not a 400,000 car exemption. It applies to those manufacturers selling less than 400,000 cars, and will apply to only about 1/4 of their fleet. So if BMW sells 300,000 cars in the US, perhaps 75,000 will fall under the exemption. And you can bet it will be their SUVs and 7- and 5-series cars, not the 3-series that competes with the CTS.

That said, this exemption is still BS.

QFT!!!!

And since some companies get all their cars counted.. then the ones that make more than that should be able to pick WHAT vehicles are counted.

So... who do we have to flood with emails to make sure this does NOT happen.

Doubtful. The cars would just cost more. For people buying a new Ferrari, I am not sure cost is that big an issue.

The sad part is; according to PCS, BMW already has the technology to MEET and EXCEED the new CAFE rules.
