New Fuel economy lables for 2012 cars

http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/label.htm

They look kind of neat, the more information the better. They had to do something new with Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles coming out soon.

Looks good to me. I like that they added the Gallons per 100 miles, as some people were wanting that info.

I hope those numbers in the first graphic aren't for the Volt...

I don't particularly care for the grading system for environmental impact/greenhouse gases. People will look at a car with a C or D rating and assume they're killing furry animals by driving one, when in reality the gap between two vehicles or even vehicles in different segments in this category may be very negligible.

Call me the tinfoil hat man but I think it's just another tool to steer people into certain types of cars.

It is no secret, the USA has energy and economic problem. Importing oil is getting too expensive and raising fuel tax to kill demand is bad politically and would be harsh on the lower and middle class. This nation would be a lot better off if it only burned 10 millions barrels a day instead of 20 million, both from an economic and national security stand point. This at least will help nudge a few people in the right direction.

I'd like to know how 65 MPGe + 38 MPGg yields an overall rating of 53.

Why? Those are pretty great numbers IMO, and are right in the ballpark of what I'm expecting.

Because we were promised 230mpg.

I like the gallons per 100 miles and I like that they're giving an actual "Dollars saved" estimate on the sticker, since I don't think a lot of people bother to do the math to see what a huge price premium their gas guzzlers really have attached.

However, I feel strong that the electric mpg rating is a complete waste. They need to give the vehicle's estimated electric range (maybe both highway and city), and then give some sort of recharge cost. That's it.

With this sticker a car with an electric range of 200 miles would get very little added appreciation above and beyond a car with a 50 mile range.

The graphic also shows it's ranking compared to midsize station wagons, so I doubt it's for the Volt.

I don't know if you checked out the site in the first link, but they have different stickers for the different types of fuel. Here is the electric only one. It does tell range and charge time.

I think that the 50 miles what just for this example. If you look just under that where it has the charge time, the 'blended' range and gas only range is on a bar that looks like it could be different for each vehicle, so I think it is a variable field.
