New CAFE numbers not as bad as they seem..
The original reported numbers were those used to generate the CAFE number, rounded to the nearest whole number. I.e. you could look at the window sticker of your 1984 car and find (.55 * city number) + (.45 * highway number) [at least I think it's .55/.45] and be pretty close to the combined number (you'd be off a bit in most cases due to using rounded numbers).
The numbers reported on the window are different now not due to manufacturer lobbying, but due to complaints from consumers.
