Need A New Car

Whats up fellow late model gm gear heads,

I've been coming to this site for awhile keeping up with GMs auto news and aftermarket and finally became a member! Now that's done I have got a question and want to see what you guys think.

My first car was a 1996 red camaro coupe I got in dec. 2001. Had 167,000 5-speed w/ the 3.8 v6 motor and rksport body kit, but it had 2 have been the cleanest car I'd seen with that many miles. Anyway, it got totaled back in jan, when I get hit from behind during icy conditions by this ******* flyin' down the road in a GMC Sierra. Now that I got my money for what was left of the car by the insurance company, and have been saving ever since I'm ready to by a new car, but I'm not sure whats best for me. Recently, I have been looking into getting a 1998-2002 Camaro SS or Trans-Am, problem is I want a 6-Speed, but I know how inconsisent a manual can be on the track if you are not good at it(which I never took my car to the track given the miles on the motor) or should I just get a 4-Speed Auto? Remind you this will also be a regualr daily car as well. Or should I just wait and get a c6 ZO6?...

Not exactly 5th gen/auto-news material. That and you'd get more responses and input in the lounge.

To answer you question: I like the GTO for a DD. Fast, comfortable, relatively practicle. Style is iffy, but who cares when the car represents such an excellent value.

I'm also begining to like the Charger...Hemi of course. Downside is styling and lack of manual tranny but there's tons of room. It's a sedan so it would make for a nice DD.

Teenager=Can't/Shouldn't be able to afford GTO or Hemi Charger.

Get an LS1 4th gen(98 Z28=Best Deal), and make up your mind if you want to be lazy(auto), or if you want to be constantly shifting gears in city driving(manny). That is a decision that should be left up to you. I have seen quite a few people get an auto for strip, and ended up wanting a manual for fun, or getting a manual for fun, but wanted an auto for less "Hassle".

Wait??!!?!?!? as is how long are you willing to wait? A good 98 ~ 02 LS1 can be had for $8,000 to around $20,000. Those prices are NOWHERE near the $70,000 (+) price tag currently on the C6 Z06.

Yeah, but he's talking about possibly waiting out for a 65+k dollar c6 z06. Clearly, a 30k car like the GTO/Charger is a noneissue as far as $$$$ is concerned. Atleast, you would think so. Anyone that could comfortably afford a c6 will have no trouble affording a GTO or a charger.

LOL I was wondering the same thing .

Hellion - If it is not going to be a long wait, I would sure as hell hold out for the C6 Z06 (it will be a many year wait for me ). If it is not going to be a long wait, please tell me where you work .

You can get a 2000-2002 C5 with under 50k miles for between 20k and 25k. If you're wanting a vette get that. Add a blower to it and there won't be much that can touch you on the road.

If it's a daily driver, I'd suggest you look at the Z28 over the SS.....simply because the ride compliance is more in keeping with a daily driver. You'll also save a few $$$ in the process.

As to 6-speed vs auto........if you're in stop and go driving each day, Automatic.

my 2 cents.

Re: Need A New Car

Fortunately theres still an absolute TON of clean low mile 98-02's out there . That would be my recommendation . As far as the 6-speed vs. Auto . I was in the auto crowd forever , but after having my 05 Cobalt SS for the last 4 months I can honestly say I couldnt possibly own a automatic car again . I even changed the plans in my 94 Z build up , and will be using a 6 speed now . Its your preference though .

Re: Need A New Car

if ya want a new car personally an 05 gto is just bad *** there is no equal to it its roomy and comfortable ya get in it and there are some really cool little things about itjust look around and youl see
the charger on the other hand has an interior that imo is terrible the outside is ehh .. nice but the interior is one of those that are the reason the brits give our cars a reputation of havin a cheap interior. but thats my opinion and if you like a dash that is like a cheap plastic wall with a steering column sticking out of it then youd love the charger.
but if used is an option which it seems to be LS1 4th gens cant be beat for the money found a 98 TA at a dealership for 9K so you know there are gonna be better deals out there
honestly though if i could have any (reasonably priced) car right now it would be the new GTO
