Motor Trend Reports on Blue Devil

Motor Trend Reports on Blue Devil
Just got my Sept. issue in the mail today. A small vague report on the Blue Devil. They are saying Chevy has a C6 chassis running around with a racing version of the 6.0L V8 bored out to 7.0L making 700-725 hp. Weight will be sub-3000lbs. Price expected around $100,000. And if Blue Devil makes it to production expect it 2 or 3 years after the C6 Z06 comes out.
Also, in the same issue is the first full test of a C6 Z51, here is the low-down.
0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds
1/4 in 12.7 @ 112.3
Top Speed 186 mph
600-ft Slalom 66.2 mph
300-ft Skidpad .95g
60-0 Braking 110 ft.

It's a good improvement for the base C6, but those numbers aren't anywhere near C5 Z06 #'s. With a good track conditions and driver, Z06s run 11.9-12.4 @ 115-118ish. See the post about GMHTP's stock Z06 test.

That does seem weak for the C6. I would have thought the quarter mile times would have been really close to the current ZO6. We will have to wait for a few other tests to get a better idea of what they run.

That's not good news.

Re: Motor Trend Reports on Blue Devil
I disagree. Motor Trend typically gets terrible ETs in its test. If they can run 12.7 @ 112 mph, then a real driver at a real track ought to pull down 12.5 or better fairly easily - with a really good driver going 12.2-12.3. Still not quite Z06, but much quicker than the current Vette.
Hmmm....makes the idea I've been tossing around a bit more appealing though....sell the Cobra, get a 2002/2003 Z06....things that make you go hmmm.

I'm with Mr. Cosby. No need for alarm, MT and R&T and the mags for the masses rarely, if ever, will drive the cars like they can be driven. GMHTP gets 11.97 @ 118 out of an '04 Z06, has any mainstream mag ever gotten even 12.5?
I think the base C6 will be every bit as fast as the current Z06 in the right hands. Wait until GMHTP puts Evan Smith in one.

Yup. MT got a 12.4@116 out of the '02 Z06. And funny thing is I have seen them getting the best times out of cars with CD close behind. RT gets the worst by far.
Besides, ET is skill, MPH is not and 112 just doesn't seem to indicate much HP given the low weight of the C6.
Maybe it was just a bad hot day.

Re: Motor Trend Reports on Blue Devil
In the right hands I was thinking a C6 should do around 12.3. Also I believe the big 3 magazines (MT,R&T,C&D) do multiple runs during testing and average those runs to come up with what they print. While our specialized magazines print the best run. Averaging the times really doesn't show what the car is capable of, but with a decent test driver it shouldn't hurt the overall out come either.
For comparision, the '04 Z06 test in GMHTP that went 11.97, dynoed at 363.6 hp and 353.2 ft-lbs. tq. at the rear wheels they figured 13% drivetrain loss for a 424hp and 412 tq. at the flywheel. I am not a math wise but the drivetrain losses seems abit much to me. Anyways it will be interesting to see how the C6 LS2 turns out on the dyno.

Most use 15% for manual and 20% for auto.
I was thinking around 12.3@116-117(correction ) too. Of course as I stated before ET is mainly driver skill. That 112 mph ain't gonna get much better no matter who's behind the wheel.
2 things I see happened.
1) GM didn't want to **** off the current Z06 owners.
2) GM wants people to pony up the extra $15K for the new Z06. Many of whom will be former Z06 owners.
It's standard tiering common across many industries. Intentionally handicap the mid range item to entice people to spend more money. Intel and AMD do this routinely in their processors. Of course, people mod there too, ie OVERCLOCK.

Re: Motor Trend Reports on Blue Devil
OK, there's a difference of 4 mph between Z06 and C6. And only 5HP? Either the C6 tested was not tuned, or the HP numbers are inaccurate for either Z06 or C6.
