More Ford News: F100 is shelved.. Ford's new engines will deliver on fuel economy.
Eric, thanks for explaining the need for the large radiator.
We determined this the first time we opened the hood. The radiator, even on my V10, is huge. The condenser is bigger than the radiator in my 2003 V6 Mazda.
In the literature, it states that all of the Powerstroke Superduty's basically have a F550 cooling system. They even have a fuel cooler. This is part of what allows them to tow so much. My husbands boss has a F450 V10, and it has the same radiator as our truck has.
You NEVER hear about a 2008 running hot.
I also agree with you on the new Silverado HD. The ONLY thing I like, is the hood.
Like I had said before, we set out thinking we were going to buy a 2005-2007 V10. We drove the 2008, and there was no way we could buy the older truck. The '08 is just so much better in pretty much every way. It drives alot smaller than it is, and is effortless in everything that it does. I love the Torqshift trans also. It is always in the right gear, and responds immediately.
Yes I'm gushing. Hey, I love my new truck, and it will probably be with us forever (it can do anything we will ever need a truck to do, which is part of the reason we bought it).

That seems problematic, considering that "mid-size" trucks like the Dakota don't offer an appreciable improvement in fuel economy over a full-size truck.
The problem with the drop-off in truck sales is that it's not just about fuel economy, it's also about price. Therefore, any truck that would be attractive to mass-market buyers will need to be efficient and cheap. The first can be addressed via technology and appropriate sizing of platforms, but the latter does not create an attractive business proposition.

One only has to look at the fuel economy of the (relative) lightweight Mustang V8 and BMW M3 to see this. The Pontiac G8 and Dodge Charger R/T both get better EPA numbers (and probably real life too), despite weighing much more.
Production started in January 2007. They are approaching 2 years old already.
