The 3.9L Impy is also keeping the 4.6L Fords honest, I see.

Good acceleration numbers, but the brakes suck. Other than the big Tahoe, it's the worst of the bunch. I wonder why the brakes were that bad. Doesn't seem to make sense. It's hard to imagine some of those larger trucks / car can stop quicker.

Re: Michigan State Police cop car shootout results.

I will get a chance to "aggressively" drive an '06 Impala 9C1 at Indy Speedway in a few weeks, along with a bunch of other police pkg. vehicles. I am hoping Chevy will have a V8 version on hand to drive either 9C1 or SS, just to give us a taste at what might be available soon on the 9C1. Also I am looking forward to driving the Pursuit Pkg. Tahoe and see how it compares to the sedans.

For one reason or another the MSP test times are always somewhat slower than real world times. They haven't tested vehicles with lightbars and stuff for years now, so I don't know why they produce such slow times.

I wonder how the V8 Impala would have compared to the Hemi Charger

Re: Michigan State Police cop car shootout results.

OK... this is downright goofy...
Explorer - 4.6 V8 - FASTEST 0-60 of anything that wasn't Hemi-powered, including the 5.4L Explorer, the Tahoe Persuit Pkg, the Impy 9C1, and the Crown Vic with 3.55's. Now that's Jumping and running pretty good for an SUV.

BUT, it dies at just 97mph?!?! WTF?!?!
He11, it was even 3rd fastest to 90mph for chrissake! Then it dies getting the last 7mph?
That has got to be governed by speed limiter... I just can't imagine why, when the Tahoe went 137mph last year. (BTW, it only got 124 this year, whassup with that?)

I know for certain the Crown Vics are speed governed to 120 and 130 depending on final drive ratios - so that's no surprise. Obviously the Impy and the Charger were not governed... to them for going open *****!

My last compliment has to be to Dodge for the 3.5 engine... that thing put down some awesome numbers in some pretty heavy cars. Must be a pretty stout little engine.

Interesting stat...
Chevy = 1 car, 3 SUV entries
Ford = 2 cars, 2 SUV entries
Dodge = 5 cars, 0 SUV entries (nope, no Durago was shown!)

Does this in any way correlate to each company's car, truck, and SUV sales in the general populace, and if so, how does the correlation translate into public sales and health of the company's lineup?

You noticed how fast that 4.6 Explorer was versus the 5.4 too, eh?? I wonder how that works...

I think the MSP tests are fascinating, but somehow always seem to have some statistic somewhere that doesn't make as much sense as it should...

Re: Michigan State Police cop car shootout results.

If that's the all-new 2006 Explorer it makes 292 horsepower with the 4.6... quite a bit more than the old V8.

Still, if that's the 3-valve 5.4L that seems strange.

This comes at a good time because my friend who's a cop keeps talking about how his Interceptor Crown Vic is so fast and could take down almost any car on the road including my GS4. The crown vic in that test was the newest model w/ 250 horsepower and it's still slow as christmas... his is from back in 1998 with 215 horsepower.

Is that your GS in the video against the LT1?

What mods were done?

For '06 the Crown Vic Interceptor got 17" wheels and finally got a balanced aluminum driveshaft, which should end all of the high speed vibration harmonics which is why the CV was limited on top end. It appears that Ford didn't lift the speed limiters because top speed didn't change from last years test which the CV was speed limited to 119mph for the 3.55 and 130mph for the 3.27 cars.
We last bought CVs in '04 with the 3.27 rear end, and those cars with lightbars top out at around 120 mph so they don't have enough grunt to overcome the aerodynamic disadvantages of the lightbar, spotlight, etc. to reach the speed limiter.
Slowly but surely Ford is making the CV a better performing car, but its a shame after all these years it doesn't have more grunt. If the Dodge Charger eats into Ford's police market maybe that will finally change before the CV dies in 2010-2011.

Also the Police Pkg. Charger is limited to 150 mph and the new Impala 9C1 is suppose to be limited to 140 mph

While I claim no knowledge of Cd for the new Charger, I just can't help but think it is not too good with the tall stance, steep windshield, and blocky front end and huge grill - yet it goes 150mph...

If - as you say - it is limited to this speed, what would top-end be for an opened version? Whatever it is - it's insane for a car that short and tall IMO.

In a way, same goes for the Impy. The new ones are so blocky and squared in the front - I don't see how they are able to move that much air around them?

Back to the Crown Vics... Ford now has so many 4.6 variants available, I don't see why in the world they don't offer a "persuit" version of the car with the 300-330hp 4-valve n/a 4.6. It's a bolt-in for Pete's sake. As said earlier, maybe Dodge coming to the game with the Hemi will instigate Ford to bolt in some more ponies. I do not think weight reduction is the way to go to gain speed for LEA work, as PIT-maneuvers and such become more risky to the officer and bystanders when you don't have the weight advantage (not to mention hauling the gear!).

Re: Michigan State Police cop car shootout results.

The Charger is limited to 150 mph because it has V rated tires. I am not sure how much more it would do above that, since it looks like a flying brick as far as aerodynamics go. I read something a while back that said 160 mph, but I am pretty sure I was reading an article about the Charger SRT-8 model.

The new Impala 9C1 with the 3.9L V6 goes 142 mph is pretty amazing, our '05 Impala 9C1s with a low profile LED lightbar strain to get up to 125mph. I would like to see what the LS4 V8 is capable of.

Its a shame the Crown Vic didn't get the Marauder motor, that would have made a decent Interceptor motor.
