I say the SLK63 hits up with the 911 in the 80-85k range. It would sure be a good compeditor, to the Z06, but then again so would a Ferrari...

 

I predict $85,000 to $95,000 for the AMG SLK, depending on options. Benzes never came cheap.

Of course the Z06 will be the driver's car. Mercedes has too many electronic alphabet soup nannies that can't be turned off to explore the car's true potential, or lack there of.

 

Impressive, but it'll never undercut it in price. Like someone else said, MB's arent cheap, esp MB's with brand new goodies added.

 

If I had to guess, I'd say this SLK63 will come around $70K. The SLK is the cheapie vert. The big dollar and heavy one is the SL. Of course, the E55 went from NA to SC with virtually no price increase in 2003.

Which then poses a very interesting question. Who would buy a Z06 over an as fast or faster MB over a difference of a few thousand dollars?

In another thread, I've posted some links to a fella who runs a big fast S600 and his new toy, an SL65 which I believe ran a low 11@127. MB is taking no prisoners and when you start playing up in their price range you better bring it.

I would. And I bet almost every person on this board would. Even if the Benz was a little faster in a straight line, the Vette would absolutely rape it around a road course. I also doubt the Benz would be faster since it will weigh 150 to 200lbs more than the Z06. The Vette also has less parasitic losses in the drivetrain due to it using a 6 speed manual vs the Benz's 7 speed auto.

 

The car is done by Renntech, is it not? I believe it is Treynor's daily driver. If so, then it is not stock. I have sat in an SL65 AMG, and it was really nice. The suckers aren't cheap though, and its kind of a big car.
I would still take the vette, because it is cheaper and will get around a track faster, unless I could buy any vehicle at the sl65's price point. In that case its an F430 for me. It doesn't suprise me you are ragging on the vette though, its seems like you would drive a beat *** escort before a vette.

I'd buy the better deal. Which would be an SLK63 at price point within +/-$5K of the Z06. I know, I know according to the Chevy Fanboy Guidebook, Rule 12 : "No one can possibly build a better high performance car for as much as the Chevy Corvette."

I doubt this engine will end up in the SLK. What prevented them from dropping any number of AMG's 500 HP engines into it now? Extra space taken by the supercharger?

This engine will go into a number of higher end AMG offerings, such as SL and S and E class, mentioned earlier.

But, if MB puts this engine into SLK... and manage to price it at 70K, I guess you can hand this one off to MB.

Most people wouldn't consider a bowtie fanboy to try to buy a Mark IV Supra, and doesn't consider getting an 03 Cobra in the next few months. But apparently to you that is the very defintion.

My point for the MBs were that they aren't stock. It is not typical of owners of SL65s to go running out the door and having their expensive *** cars modified either, despite what auto performance forums on the internet would have you believe. A friend of mine has an uncle with a SL55 AMG, and the last thing on his mine is to go void its warranty. He bought a Viper for the fun stuff. My point is, you always compare a modded vehicle to a stock one that isn't even out yet, which is pretty stupid, as it is far from scientific.

 

If AMG ups the power from 355HP to 500HP then the price will go up too. Mercedes isn't going to sell a $65K car that is faster than there $128,000, 493HP, 4280 lbs. SL55 AMG, if you think they will then you are smoking crack.

Also the Z51 is about 50HP more powerful and 200lbs. lighter than the current SLK55. Z51 would have a good lead on a SLK55 in any type of race.
