Make the case for this Buick halo car...
It may make money now..but that is because they have not spent any money on it. I say give it 3-5 years. After GM has spent the money on new marketing and models..to reposition the brand, and the cars don't sell ..they will give up. Just like they did Saturn, and Olds.
because it's stunning and should be sold here regardless of what it is. as others have noted the regal line could be an entry level competitor to other premium makes' entry level. if the buick line can be seen as representative of a new GM banner, rather than under the buick banner, then it can be more universal. buick still has some baggage issues.
the roadster and the opc insignia could help buick to be remade. and as others said here, these are what is needed to bring interest to the brand. other than that it doesn't stand a chance.

Looks like GM are still quite fond of Opel... given their resistance to some of Magna's overtures.

the 4-door looks pretty bland to me. I think Buick would benefit from a high-volume sales car that is centered on what they want Buick to represent and a good marketing campaign in the US much more than they would benefit from a "halo car". A Halo car to me is an extreme, attention-getting, expensive car that doesn't sell in high numbers. That's detrimental when the brand really needs to forge its identity and get sales for dealerships that are losing their Pontiac volume.

The Enclave is selling well. I bet this new LaCrosse does as well. This isn't going to be a volume brand in the US. It will sell at a better premium than Saturn or Olds. It also is extremely valuable in China. Even if it doesn't make money in the US, which I bet it will, it will make money in China. Keeping it alive in the US maybe worth it for that reason alone.
Saturn and Olds didn't have that. Neither did Pontiac. I can't really say what Olds competed with, but Saturn and Pontiac competed for the same buyers as Chevy. Chevy made money. The others needed to go.
