500 HP in a $80K family luxury sedan. Neat...

I didn't like this quote though...

If rumors circulating at the M5's unveiling at Geneva in March hold true, the new engine will rev close to 8500 rpm in production trim.
Sooo.... The engine won't rev to 8500 if it isn't unveiled at Geneva?

It is implying that there were rumors circulating around Geneva (where this "concept" M5 was introduced, IIRC) concerning the engine, and if those rumors hold true, the production engine will redline at ~8500 rpm.

This is the benchmark the STSv needs to beat, correct?

Not necessarily. I believe STS will be closer to the 7 in size than the 5 (kind of like the CTS is closer to the 5 than the 3, even though it is priced like a 3). The CTS-V is kind of in between the M3 and M5; a little less boy-racer-ish than the M3, but not quite as up to the M5 on interior/ luxury content. It will be interesting to see how a V-Series STS is played off.

not to be nitpicky, but why is the torque output so low compared to the HP??

can anyone explain?

Because it makes the HP at a very high RPM. HP is just an equation of Tq & RPM

CTSv still has more torque (400 vs 369-lb-ft )

Also, I'd think it would be related to a large # of cylinders over a small relative displacement (?).

A seven speed manual? Man, that gives new meaning to the phrase "rowing through the gears."

If you think 6 gears are anoying in traffic.....

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the new V10 make as much tq as the V8 it is replacing? If this is the case, I think this engine will have a LOT of gearing bcuz it gave up lowend for high hp numbers.

I was waiting for the new M5 and decided to go with the CTS-V about 4 weeks ago. I do not regret it at all! To me, the interior of the CTS-V is nicer then the 545...I have yet to see the final interior of the M5.

Also, the M5 is supposed to come with a 7sp SMG tranny...not quite the same as 7sp manual. I would have rather had SMG in my CTS-V then the manual.

One more thing...I am not sold on iDrive. I don't mind buttons!
