They werent named because of their displacements , but the Cavalier Z24's were using a 2.4 DOHC 4 cyl. before switching to the 2.2 ecotec in 01 or 02 . And the old Lumina Z34 did use a DOHC 3.4 V6 . The theory falls apart with the Z28 and Z26 ....and Z71

Actually I am. Much of the life of the Z24 and the entire Z34 lives had displacements that matched the badging. Why wouldn't a 3.6L engined Z car be designated Z36? The original Z24 had a 2.8L V6 and obviously it wasn't going to get the Z28 designation because the model already exists.

1.4T in its current trim is geared for fuel economy. They put that same engine into a sports hatch.
Can they pull more power out of it? Sure, Id say that 170hp or more could come of it.
the 1.4T does NOT have direct injection.

Z34 entire life was not matching a 3.4. It was replaced with a 3800 after the 97' model year.

z24 cavalier started as a 3.1v6 until the 3rd generation cavaliers. 96 or so. in 95 a z24 had a 2.3L dohc. Then 96 started the 2.4L.

OK, my bad. I guess I don't have as much knowledge of the non Z28, Chevy Zxx heritage as many here. I do question why so many people took it so seriously.

i appreciated the boxy z24s as a kid for what they were. Gm's whole throwing names away is a shame because i think the cobalt and now cruze would bring more sales improving on the cavalier name then standing on zero name recognition each new generation. Hopefully new GM changes from the old way of thinking.
Back on track....I think Aveo RS would be better off at or near 200hp, with possible stage upgrade kkits offered for the boy racers like the srt4 and ss had.

I think the early Z24's were pretty cool little cars. Easy to afford, torquey V6, stick, nice exhaust note.

z24 went as far back as 86 or 87 with the 2.8V6.

My cousin hotrodded an '88 with cam, some headwork, rockers etc. and ran high 14's at low 90's back in the day, without headers etc... not bad for the day.

I should have said "at most" that's what the car needs, not "that's all the car needs."

I personally don't think Aveo RS needs to pass 200 HP mark. I was just saying there is no point of shoehorning a DI 3.6 into it.

180 hp should more than suffice if its torquey as well.

I had a 1985 Camaro with a 2.8L v6, tho not a "Z28" ofcourse...
More power small package, the LNF motor is an obvious choice.
