Looking for an internship at GM

I am looking for a good internship this summer. Does GM have internships for people other than engineering students? I would love to get in on the ground level of the planning or marketing division, and see how I like life in the auto industry. If I really like it, I could pursue an MBA or whatever degree would make sense for the job.

Right now I am three years into my two degrees at Maryland - Journalism and Jewish studies. Neither of them apply directly to work at GM, but they do ensure that I write well, think very well under pressure, and make very few mistakes (spelling error in journalism class = automatic 'F'). Obviously, I would not spend so much of my free time reading here and other places if I was not head over heels in love with automobiles, and I think I am smarter than the average bear when it comes to criticial thinking and knowing what works and what doesn't with cars.

Where should I look? Are my Motown aspirations unrealistic?

I sent my resume through there, but I'm worried my journalism experience is going to be washed out by a bunch of people in business school. Is there a way to stand out?

With a journalism background, you might want to look to the PR department.

I don't know how GM works, but in many businesses the HR department is a black hole. If you could find a name, it wouldn't hurt to send a letter directly to to a manager.

Also check your University, because they often have contacts to the people running internship programs.
