Lexus leads, Hyundai improves, while Infiniti drops in J.D. Power 2009 Initial Qualit
Where's Buick? More of from the press release at the link...

J.D. Power and Associates has released its 2009 Initial Quality Study (IQS) and Lexus has taken the top spot away from Porsche, the initial quality leader for the past three years. The annual J.D. Power study measures IQS based on problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100) -- a lower score means a lower rate of problem incidences and higher quality.
This year, the industry average is 108 PP100, demonstrating a steady improvement from 118 PP100 in 2008, and 125 PP100 in 2007. In addition to the marked improvement by the industry overall, many brands continued to perform well in 2009. Following Lexus and Porsche is Cadillac (which moves from 10th rank position in 2008 to third in 2009), Hyundai (jumping from 13th rank position in 2008 to 4th in 2009) and Honda (up from 7th in 2008 to 5th in 2009). Infiniti, second in last year's study, drops to 11th overall, while Suzuki posts the largest improvement in ranking, moving from 32nd place in 2008 to 9th in 2009. The complete J.D. Power press release and charts can be found after the jump and in the gallery below.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Lexus, Porsche, and Cadillac have exceptional quality. I do wish it was Cadillac on top.
It also doesn't surprise me that the other mainstream brands (Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Honda) are all clustered together, averaging roughly one problem per vehicle. I'd like to think that companies that have been in the auto business this long could actually do better than that, but I guess not.
What does surprise me:
Mercedes is no better than Toyota.
BMW is way down the list.
Hyundai in 4th place! I haven't seen a Hyundai I liked yet, but props to them for getting their quality to where it is.

It's odd how these things change from year to year. Last year, as a brand Nissan was 19th and three steps below the industry average while Infiniti was second overall.
This year, Infiniti is 11th overall but Nissan moved up to 13th place and just one step below the industry average.
It will be interesting to see changes in the long-term numbers.

Found it...was on dependability...not initial quality..

Either way, it's not about being a great deal for the money. If I'm buying a new car, it's going to be because I love it. There's no other way to justify the financial aspect of buying a new car. As nice as a V8 Genesis or loaded Sonata might be, there's just no way I could fall in love with either (even ignoring their country of origin).
I don't buy foreign cars, and I don't have money for a new car anyway, so no, I'm not exactly in the habit of going out and test driving anything (I haven't even driven a new Camaro yet, although I hope to do that pretty soon).

my wife and i have decided that after be bought our 2009 fusion, that we will only buy Americans. the next 3 purchases that we will be making are, corvette z06, ford edge/fusion hybrid, cadillac escalade, respectively.
so that when people call me *****s, i can open my garage and tell them "i am more american than you!"
