Large SUVs lose luster, cost Big 3
Re: Large SUVs lose luster, cost Big 3
But both companies are making plans to build big SUVs that share underbodies with steady-selling full-size trucks. That gives them the ability to shift production to trucks if the large SUV market should weaken further.

I dunno where theyre losing thier luster but it definatly isn't in orlando florida. Last night at work (i work at publix, a grocery store) it was just about all you see in the parking lot. Personally I think theyre gay and hardly anyone that has them needs them or uses them for thier purpose.

exactly.. luxury is all about excess.. more than you need.
so for some people, its about nice interiors, hi tech gizmo's, bank vault silence.
for other, its simply sheer size.... more room than you ever need, and safety at the expense of thers.
an finally for a lot of us.. HP, accel and speed.. we want to go fast, and accel quickly..
So right now, big SUV's are taking the brunt of the blame, since everyone has them, and they are highly visible.
If they go down, muscle and sports cars are going to be next highly visible target.. you don't _need_ that huge V8.. you can get better gas milage, and more interior room with a Civic.
Next, although stretching, would be your lux cars.. all that fancy equipment, sound deadners, takes up weight, which robs mpg..
then we'll all be driving bare eco boxes.. if not forced into public trans.

On the down side...the lower popularity of SUV's will have safety and environmental groups shifting their focus to the "evils" of performance cars and larger V8 engines. One thing I can say for sure is that SUV's took some of the pressure off of cars like F-bodies and Mustangs.

there are some differences though.. GM SUV's use coil springs instead of leafs out back..

more interior junk standard V8.. actually, a comparable truck is pretty close up there..
both trucks and SUV's are extremely high margin anyways... they price them that high cause they can sell em that high.

Just wait, all of the pansy treehuggers will now aim hardcore for the 300C, Magnum R/T, GTO, Mustang, Charger, and the new Impalas with the 5.3s
