How many of you guys get 18-20 city stock? Not many that way either unless you granny shift. I tell you what my maro is my daily right now until i get my blazer...and guess what if gas goes too much higher it will make it difficult to say the least. Yeah sure i could get a 30mpg civic but do i really want a car that has styleing that doenst appeal to me? a car i am just going to hate? No!

So tell you what lets all stop bitchen cause the "suv craze" isnt going away anytime soon.
If your not getting at least 18 MPG in the city stock in an LS1, your doing something very wrong... Pure city driving, I get 23 MPG EASILY, and thats with 227K miles reading on the odometer. Even when I get on it, I can't even TRY to get below 18 MPG... and granny shifting actually hurts gas milage

Theconsensus we have reached in this thread so far is that in order for economical cars to work, they have to be somewhat luxurious, comfortable, not small and dorky looking, and be fun to drive. (Maybe thats why the new Lexus SUV hybrid is alreaddy doing so well, and obviously the Prius (doubling production as we speak, you can't find a used Prius that costs much less than a brand new one)).Raise gas prices and EVERYTHING we buy will increase in price dramatically, including our vehicles...and CAFE needs to be tweaked quite a bit.

So what if people like suv's? I really dont have a problem with it. Up here in the NE its one of the most sensible vehicles to have since winter is a b!tch. I have to go to work in all types of weather, snow days are not allowed in my job description since i have to relieve someone and if i dont show they dont go home. So guess what folks..i am getting a gas guzzlen suv! Because i cant afford to get stuck, in the snow, rain, mud, flood etc. Go to your local PD/fd and ask them what they drive? 90% of them here drive tucks and suv's.

We really cant talk about gas guzzlers since guess what our hobby isnt exactly the most economical or earth friendly. The day they make a v8 that gets 30mpg city will be the day i take these comments back.

Auto makers will not end the suv craze if people keep buying them. They are the "cool" mini vans now. Automakers should be trying to raise mpg anyway this just pushes them in that direction. Also if you think full size cars are going to break 20mpg city your nuts. Look at the impy SS. Your lucky if you get 16. Same goes for the crown vic etc.

There are a ton of hyporcites on this board. They all **** and moan about emissions but when it comes to mpg and suv's good lord watch out. And what suv costs 50k other then a friggen caddy? Most go for mid 20's low 30's. They are sensible cars to have if you live in bad climate. Plus some people just like big cars...you know the american way? So what if i have a truck for haulen crap to the dump for? Just because i dont use it for construction work i shouldnt be allowed to use it? or have it? Your friggen nuts and some of you need to grow up.

Holy overreaction batman.

Read my post again. Slowly this time if you need to. Im arguing that it would be better if CAFE were repealed. Right now, the government IS telling people what they can and cannot drive, to some extent. Im also saying, ALTHOUGH I DONT WANT IT TO HAPPEN IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM, that the only real way to encourage fuel economy is to raise gasoline taxes. However, as has been pointed out, you can only do that so much before the economy implodes. Read before you spew.

I would personally like the government to get their grubby hands off everything, including cars and fuel, but thats me. Even with gas where it is, manufacturers are starting to feel the customers want for better mileage. That is where the need for better mileage needs to come from. Not from legislation.

Oh, and about the Lexus 400h... How much do you think that thing would cost if Toyota didnt subsidize it? Same with Prius. They're not fair comparisons, because the REAL price of the car almost certainly outweighs its fuel economy benfits.

It would be nice. But the problem is that people tend to NOT worry about the future. I mean, think about how many people don't save for their retirement when they know that social security will not be there for them.

Sure, higher fuel prices could be bad for the economy. But slow, gradual increases are managable. People can adapt. Move Closer to work. Buy a more efficient car. You can plan for these things in advance. Hey, maybe someone would start manufacturing things here again, instead of shipping goods from China.

Sudden, unplanned increases or shortages will screw the economy far worse. You won't have time to plan or adapt. People will just cruise along and then bam. Suddenly you can't afford to drive your SUV anymore and it is worthless because the market for them completely collapsed overnight. The big three are closing factories because they didn't have time to switch production away from full size SUVs. Job loss ripples through the economy. It'll be the 1970's all over again.

Toyota CLAIMS that they are making a profit off of the new Prius...so I would assume that if they are really making a profit on that, then they definately are making a profit on the 400h.

23 city hunh? sorry to say i dont believe you. I have an m6 ls1 and i get on average with shifting at 2k every time and useing 5th gear above 35mph i get on average 18-21 city. Autos are lower. Add on more mods stop and go driveing and it takes its toll. Our cars are not all that economical and not too emissions friendly and not a great daily driver. Granny shifting only hurts your mpg when your going up a 45* hill in 5th gear or any situation that causes the motor to work harder without getting all that power to the ground.

Hey i have an idea, all kids and red necks drive 2 door coups so lets get rid of them because i am tired of kids driveing fast cars and people speeding. Thats pretty much what this tread has summed up too. Yeah soccer moms drive suv's some can drive some cant. How do you like a sterotype?

and misshift it wasnt souly directed at you. I was just addressing most of the posts here and i just happen to quote you.

All the CAFE is supposed to do is motivate automakers to produce more economical vehicles. I am glad all of you think taxes solve everything.

people want strong, reliable cars. Thats why people dont want the hybrids. They cost an arm and a leg and they look like a golf cart with a shell. Nothing special. Plus the technology isnt good enough yet in those cars.

I disagree because the average consumer that is buying an average car is looking for one with good gas mileage. That's why there's so many 4 cylinders around and small 6's. Gas is somewhat expensive.
