I think the most interesting thing I heard from Toyota was that they think there will be 3 major players in the world of automotive. 1) GM 2) Toyota and the 3rd is not yet reared it's head.
Get this, they also talked about how good GM's quality has become.

First: "PRODUCTION" is different than "SALES".
Second: GM is the largetst automaker in the world (and certainly the largest manufacturer in North America by a long shot) so it would be expected that their production would be bigger than, for example, Toyota or Ford (especially North American production; see "Third" below).
Third: You are looking at North American production; as such, models produced by Tyoyta or Nissan, etc outsied of North America would not be included in these figures.
I'm not trying to nit-pick here and the fact that production is "up" is good...just pointing out that the numbers, by themselves don't give a very good picture of the health of a particular automaker.
Some stats that woudl be more informative woudl be actual sales figures and such things at number of days of inventory sitting on dealer's lots, etc.

seriously, production numbers are a window to sales figures, after all they didn't manufacture all those cars and trucks, and only sell 1/2.
These numbers do show the scale of things here in the US (where GM is wdoing the worst glabally). Globally, they are doing much better.

I'm thinking that if Toyota is as adamant about quality as I expect them to be, they may not be as cost effective at it as GM can be. Meaning at least slightly more expensive to far more expensive Toyotas for you and me...well you and never me, as compared to an on par or better product from our companies. Either people will be willing to pay or domestics will gain more steam with their newer and better than ever offerings. Pure speculation on my part but I wont give the Japanese credit where credit isnt due. They have to get there first.
I like your insite. I do not work for Toyota or in the auto industry anymore. I used to work for GM/Isuzu. I was at Toyota for lean cross training. LOL, Too much informaiton I know.
You wouldn't believe how much Toyota learns from GM or vice versa. From my understanding Toyota is looking at how GM deals with such a large quantity of production. These are not stupid companies. Besides Toyota owes alot to GM and while I was there they didn't shy away from that.
