So...

Who do you trust?
Your average interstate driver....

or

General Motors cars cruising themselves down the highway?

Put me down for the computer.

Plus, if it runs on Windows, it'll crash without me.

I wrote my thesis on AI in automobiles like this. I had video of a truck, city bus, and bonneville that they all had wired to drive on its own in a number of conditions. There were a bunch of other projects like "racoon" too that could triangulate taillights of a car up ahead at night to determine bends in the road, etc

I believe Carnegie Mellon has alot going on, although Id have to pull out my old paper to be more specific, its been a few years. I did find this though:

when a car drives itself, that is the day driving is no longer any fun. Boring crap and IMHO prone to failure.

I like the idea of the OPTION to put your car on to an autopilot control, but at what point does the car sence you are doing "bad things" and want to take over and disable your ability to drive the car?
I dont think that a computer can process the information of every single possible accident.

Well for most of the driving public, which are too busy to be actually be bothered with driving, these cars will be a godsend.

and on a more positive note, sexually induced genitalia amputations should go down.
