FORD RESPONSE TO TODAY'S ITC DECISION
NOTE TO EDITOR: The U.S. International Trade Commission today voted to continue duties on imports of certain hot-rolled, flat-rolled carbon-quality steel products from Brazil, Japan and Russia. During hearings last month, Ford executives testified as part of a coalition of manufacturers and suppliers that tariffs were no longer needed because the steel industry is consolidated, competitive and recording record profits. The following statement is attributable to Ford Motor Company:
WASHINGTON, DC, April 14 - "Today's International Trade Commission decision seriously impacts steel consuming manufacturers as well as our entire economy. We had argued and will continue to argue that by removing the duties, the Commission would bring more balance, fairness and competition to the marketplace. We are encouraged that two of the six commissioners agreed with our position. By maintaining the import restrictions, the U.S. will continue to see constrained supplies of steel and prices that are artificially high.
