A DTS.........which I'm very happy about. ---had one two years ago and quite frankly it was the first vehicle that I could take an exit ramp at speed....other than Camaro/Firebird/Corvette........that I didn't have to worry about rolling! I was quite taken aback........fast, quiet, very comfortable....great turnpike cruiser.......

I am not going to try to say the magazine editors actions should be condoned, but I think there was much more good done here than harm. How many guys are going to grap a copy of this magazine just to flip through it, and see how mean the new z06, especially in a setting that many of us can relate to? I know when I read the article a ways back, my first thought wasn't "What a social devient to be racing a loaner car on the street" (even though he quite possibly was), I was thinking, damn, that car is awesome. Besides, I doubt anything will happen to the guy, they did the same thing with the c6 and the new 997 Porsche 911 when they came out, racing them by some park or something.

Re: Interesting article on the C6 Z06

perhaps.......but what would have happened had someone stepped out in front of the car.......or, as happened last week....another vehicle was struck and three people killed?

It would have been tragic all around............and of course the lawsuit would make the Guiness Book of World Records.

Yes, perhaps people look at the performance....but my first thought was "ok....any of these professional drivers????"

Re: Interesting article on the C6 Z06

That was a pretty sweet article...I love the new Z06 and hope to have one some day, (well, maybe not a '06, it'd probably be more like a '10 or '11, lol). I have to admit though that the part about the firebird taking it out at the end left me feeling a little warm and fuzzy inside

Oh I don't deny the entertainment aspect of the story, just the writers judgement. It just seems that for a loaner that he's not supposed to beat on, that he's pretty much burned his bridges in terms of ever getting his hands on some OTHER GM PERFORMANCE car that he may want to do a write up on someday.

On a side note, I had the opportunity a few years back to spend some time in a prototype ZL-1 Camaro (the LS-6 variety). The driver had a GOLDEN opportunity to dispatch a 911 "with extreme prejudice" to quote the article in question, but the ZL-1 driver did not take the bait. Now at the time, I was very disappointed, but of course, it was the right thing to do, as it was on a public road and all. Not so much for the career of the individual in question, but for the safety of us, the other driver, and whoever was out that night. I guess I'm just a little more leery of these things since we seem to have a disproportional amount of fatal, stupid, and unnecessary accidents around here involving street racing.

But for the record, I did enjoy the article, just wouldn't want to be that guy when GM gets done with him. And FWIW, there have been magazine editors that have ended up on the wrong side of GM for things such as this.

I won't disagree that it could have ended badly, but it got the results that the magazine editors wanted. Look out how many people in this thread have said it was a sweet article so far. Also, I don't think GM is too concerned with the loaner car getting beat on, as all of these magazines, be they MPH, C&D, Motortrend, etc..., beat on the cars they review, usually pretty hard too. As Red mentioned, it is probably more along the lines of the legal aspects of the situation.

Getting beat on, no. Getting beat on while street racing...absolutely! I should have been more specific.

Re: Interesting article on the C6 Z06

we know our cars in the press fleet are gonna get beat on....we design our cars and trucks to get beat on. Yes, we engineer to failure then go back and re-engineer.

But it comes down to a question of safety.

WE had an employee one time ....who decided to have a beer or 25....and headed south on I-75........well, before he hit a concrete wall and incinerated both himself and the Corvette that he was driving.........he killed a couple of people............................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..........................that's what I mean by poor judgement. Yes, great article and it paints a pretty rosy picture of the Z06........but it also seems to condone Street Racing....and that REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY P***ES me off.

It's just wrong. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

I love those cutaway pictures of cars that show you what is going on underneath. There never seems to be any shortage of them for the vettes, either. I do get frustrated with the magazines using engine power versus weight though, and they all do this. I would much rather see wheel power versus weight ratio. I know a magazine is going to be reluctant to dyno every performance car it gets for an accurate number, but at the very least it would be nice if they used a standard correction factor for drivetrain loss and gave the reader an idea of how much actual horsepower at the ground was pulling the weight of the car. Both the new Mustang GTs and the Subaru WRX STI are 300hp cars, but somehow I doubt the Suby is getting as much power to the ground as the Mustang is.

This is where the guys with three nuts come out ahead. They could sell a nut for a Z06 and still have two left.
