HEY! was that link to an '05 Mustang??? Oh crap that's a '66...

I 100% agree that if you want a 66 Mustang Fastback, go buy one and not a 2005. Road and Track reviewed it and seemed to think retro was good??? Not quite sure on that one. If I'm buying a new car, I want one that's new, not one with a 40 year old look.

ditto.

It's a volume production car, though, and I think always has been. I think a more unique car awaits my future. I hated having the 02 and seeing everyone else have one with the same body style all over the place.

The more I see the '05, the more I feel that it's grown alittle too big. Especially in it's rear overhang.

Wow, I really agree with you about the rear overhang. It looks pretty bad in that picture. Very out of place. If you took about 6 inches to a foot off of the rear, it would have a much better stance in my opinion.

BTW, what's the curb weight on a '05 GT coupe?

Dan

You think that is bad? You should see the Saleen from certain angles. The extra additions from the gfx make it look even bigger. The Saleen looks like it gained the c5's ghetto booty. The rear just appears huge in comparison to the rest of the car.

The problem is how much that 66 Mustang will cost you. In your ebay link its already at $22,500 with the reserve not met. I did not live through the muscle car years or the early years of the pony car wars. I go to car shows and see late 60s Camaros and Mustangs and I say 'that's what I want!'. But then common sense kicks in and tells me I don't have the money, the time, the luxury of foregoing safety(have 2 kids) and everyday drivability to own a 66 Mustang. Whats the next best thing? Thank you Ford for letting me have a small taste of the 60s. I loved the style of the 60s Camaro and Mustang and I would love a retro Camaro.

The fact is, to many, the Mustang is a fresh design. How many late 60s Camaros and Mustangs do you see on the road? Here in NY very few. Only at car shows. So the average shmoe in their 20-30s does not look at the new Stang and say "unoriginal" or "done that already" cause they don't even realize its a retro design. To them its a design they've never seen in their lifetime and its awesome.

Re: Interesting '05 Mustang observation

I am an avid camaro guy, and I saw one of these GT's on the road the other day...to my suprise I wanted to follow it to get a closer look. I hate mustangs, mostly for teir interior space, it always was too small for my 6 foot frame. My buddies 87, and my ex-girlfriends '96 convert..both had the same amount of interior space and I was cramped. The camaro/firebird always fit better. But I really enjoy the exterior styling of the '05. I think it's great that a manufacturer finally got the idea that lots of people like the old styling mixed with the new. Look at modern Restomod cars. They almost always blend a stock looking body with a modern powertrain, why because people like the way old cars look. Now if this mustang does well and GM realizes it maybe they'll repond with something that looks like Kris' Camaro of the future. That would kick major *** as I've alwaysed loved the first gens. Now take that and modernize it a little to keep it fresh, throw a healthy motor into it, make it ride softer than a rock and I'll buy one in a heartbeat. All the manufacturers need to realize that old school sells. It will sell as long as it's not the exact same thing as the original...

and the overhang in the rear doesn't look so bad in person.

You'd be surprised how many people cannot identify a 60s Mustang. When I asked several people at my work if they thought the car looked too much like the 60s they didn't even know what the 60s car looked like. Only car enthusiasts are gonna see the similarities...not your average car buyer.

Re: Interesting '05 Mustang observation

IZ28 went and saw 2 05 GT's yesterday. Now you all know I am a Camaro guy but I will say a few things.

The 05 being bigger is a good thing as there is more interior room and it gives the car a little more presense than the usual tiny "girly" M*stangs that we're used to. I don't find the interior design nice at all, it's odd, as is the exterior design. You can place things on the front bumper overhang. I found the car to be a little plain and less aggressive than the previous GT. Do I think it will sell? Yes, unless people get tired of them fast. Do I think it will ever sell as good as the last car? No. I still haven't seen any on the road BTW. The suspension did look somewhat 3rd Gen-like and there were also certain similar rake aspects as some have mentioned. There were no other people there looking at them.

I am 6' 4" and the new GT fits me better then my z28. I dont even have to put the seat all the way back like in mustangs past. It has much more room for the driver.

At least Saleen has wheels to fill the gaps...

But man those overhangs in the Ford Racing picture not only look huge, the wheels are tiny...

My thoughts exactly. Took a look at a GT this past weekend. The proportions look really good in person, and the interior is more comparable to an F-Body now in terms of dimensions.

If I had my druthers and the dollars, I would love to have a '58 Vette with C5/C4 drivetrain and suspension and brakes. It's a good time for the older designs to be revisited and modernized. The Boss 302 has always been a hot looking car ... now you can have one without the hot rod hassles.
