I know J Mays is Fords top stylist but he's not worth much to me. What has he created?? He's just rehashed old designs, Beetle, T-Bird, Mustang, and Ford GT.....
I guess he doesn't understand the whole modern looking car idea. And while the GTO isn't the most eye-catching design its still impressive for what it is.

I forsee a lot of people's opinions changing of the GTO when they are released and the public gets to see and know them first hand.

GTO

I dont think anyone here is argueing the fact that the GTO will be a great car.

But in fact what Gm and lutz has done is to split their buyer base in to groups, those that really hate the car and have actually owned a GTO and those who are willing to wait until they drive it to see, mostly those guys that never owned a GTO.

Of those that really hate the car, is the group that helped create and buy the original GTO's and kept pontiac in business during the 60's and 70's. And yes Lutz is going to put some hood scoops, ram air, true duals, and maybe a retro cue on the car next year. But they were told over and over agian that these items were important to the GTO owners and waited until some of the forum sites blasted its looks before they said DUH maybe we should listen.

And be nice with what you say about these guys they are the most avid muscle car fans on earth and are partially responsible for the mania that most of you enjoy today.

I myself have driven the Aussie version while visiting my daughter I found it very much like my 96 vette, excellent steering, good interior, and about the same power as my vette. Is it anything like my 2 GTO's no not even close and any one that says different hasn't ever driven or owned one.

I think if this car were called any thing but GTO it would have been a super hit with everybody. But for the GTO crowd a few things have to happen for it to be a real GTO.

a. It must be made in the good ole USA
b. a few retro cues it doesn't take much at all just a little.
c. Develope some special packages.
d. GM has to support the car like ford does their mustang.

Then maybe it will win over some of those hard core GTO owners.

So your saying that a GTO will eat a MACH1? This I will put money on.

A 2002 Monaro CV8
does the 1/4 in 14.3. click me for proof

Oh wait,The 2002 HSV GTO coupe will do 14 flat.Still isnt a problem.

Not a particularly accurate PDF there tho - there are a number of incorrect model names and designations amoungst the Holdens and HSVs there.

Either way, I've seen stock Commodore sedans run 13.7 with a good driver. With the extra power in a GTO, I'm sure you'll see a 13.5 no sweat.

Actually the Mach I will beat it and so might the GT, especially when the 05 comes out.

I am willing to bet that the GTO will have no problem with any GT up until now and we'll see about the 05'.

Heck I just dusted a paper-plated GT vert tonight in my 104,000 mile, 9 year old Z28...I highly doubt a revised LS1 in the GTO will have a problem with one.

We'll have to see what the next Mustang weighs in at before we know how a ~300 HP GT performs (although rumor is it will weigh a bit more than the SN95.)

J. Mays is simply a designer, and is offering his opinion from a design perspective.

However, I wonder if he actually is aware the GTO was evolutionary, and had no fewer than 5 different looks, all viewed as low keyed in it's day, and classical today?

If he's going to offer an opinion as to how a GTO should look, perhaps he should point out which GTO year he's refering to as the "GTO look". They all look like Tempests and LeMans to me.
