Thumbs up Re: Impala SS vs GP GXP. SS wins!

Hmm... Like they said, I bet the GXP weighs a little more. What's really interesting is that that one guy lists his 1/8 mile time as a 9.0 @ 79mph. That's almost exactly what my WS6 ran. Kinda puts what these new W-bodies can do into perspective. Impressive.

I would write it off as one of those things. I remember when Motor Trend tested Camaro SS and a Trans Am and found the T/A to be significantly quicker.

It could be that the Impala's engine was more broken in. Perhaps the GXP had something in the trunk. Maybe the Impala had less gas.

They listed the curb weight of the Impala as 112 pounds heavier than the G.P. so I don't think weight can really be argued.

I would be really dissappointed if the Grand Prix couldn't pull on the Impala, especially with the aided traction at launch of the bigger front tires.

And I also remember reading an issue where the Camaro SS edged out a WS6 Trans Am by a .10 of a second. Who knows, maybe the Grand Prix just got a rough launch. I'm sure it is pretty tricky to get those things off the line with 300hp on tap with a FWD platform. Wheelhop and tirespin are all to common on my GTP.

This got my wondering about other cars like this.

Which was faster between the previous gen w-bodies: Grand Prix GTP, Buick Regal GS or the late to the show Impala SS.

Isnt the LS4 303hp 5.3 liter available in the Monte Carlo SS? I wonder if it weighs any less then its 4 door sisters.

I had a 1999 GTP and my stock time was 14.4@95mph (if I remember correctly). With my Impala SS it was 15.0@90mph stock (my best now with a 3.4 and CAI 14.3@97mph) and MT ran a 14.7. The only explanation I have that my Impala was so slow stock is the torque management (10% for the 99 and 20% for the 2000). I believe the Regal GS is the lightest of the supercharged W-bodies and the Impala the heaviest.

Doesn't the GXP have wider rubber upfront (where Impala is same at all 4)? I'd think the GXP would be quicker or at least have less torque steer.

This is also one person's experience between stop lights. Hardly an overwhelming declaration of one being faster than the other. They seem so close that any race would be between drivers alone.

On a related note....our local Va Beach Dealer (RK Chevy), got a new Impala SS in today. Seeing it in person vice pictures is nothing blood stirring to me, but that is personal preference. What is not personal preference is the $3127 "adjusted market value" that they added on to the sticker.

Some idiot will pay it, too.

Not surprising considering the dealer. RK is text book 'shiesty dealer' to a T.
