If and when we get a new Camaro how would you like to see the options lined up?

I'm probally a little too old fashioned, because I don't feel a sports car should be loaded down with expensive, weight increasing items like navigation, heated seats, etc.

It would be OK if they were part of an options list where you can check off any option you want and not get anything you don't. But let's be realistic here. The day that some of these "options" appear, it's going to end up on a "Option Group" where those of us who don't want it will be forced to take it (ie: the heated leather seats that can't be separated in some GM models).

None of those choices really fits my bill.

Although I'd want a 5th gen Z/28 to be filled with premium components, (chassis, powertrain, interior)....I really have no use for fluffy items like heated/cooled seats, nav, onstar, etc.

Re: If and when we get a new Camaro how would you like to see the options lined up?

I think that this might be the wrong place to put a thread like this.

I would think that the option packages could be selected differently from model to model.
I figure the Z28 will be more along the lines of the Z51 then Z06. It wont be a total seperate production quazi-super car, but it will deffinatly offer more performance with shorter ratio 6spd, bigger brakes. Options like a tire and wheel package that will offer more tire, but I think that there should at least be an "information package" that would include upgraded electronics. Things like offering different a "1LE" package wouldnt consist of stripping everything, but giving you more performance such as stiffer suspension, sharper steering, and larger cross drilled rotors.
SS could get more of an appearance package items like side skirts, and also offer more things like heated/cooled leather seats, On Star, might be packaged differently for the SS then the Z28.

It would also be nice to see a LT model with Magnetic Ride Control, 5.3 V8 only, and 6spd auto with standard leather seats, and option packages that would make it more of a luxury car.

For me all I'll need is a good suspension,a/c,radio and a 350 in my next Z28,then all is good.I don't care about all of that frilly stuff, leave that for the SS or better yet an options list to check off.

at this point, i think GM is probably going to mess up the camaro so badly the option packages will probably not matter so much.

assuming they dont though, there had better be a stripper model because thats what i want more than anything.

Re: If and when we get a new Camaro how would you like to see the options lined up?

I would like to see more options and fewer packages, but there are several problems:

Forecasting. It is far more difficult to forecast the demand for many individual options (i.e. how many people would get seat heaters) than a few option packages (i.e. how many people will get the stripped car and how many will get the loaded car). More accurate forecasting means more stable production and lower cost (and also fewer parts shortages).

Customers. Customers will be more picky - a dealer may have an almost identical car on the lot to the one the consumer wants, but they refuse because it doesn't have the one item they really want. With only a few model levels, it is easier to have the model on hand that the customer wants.

Cost: Added complexity = added cost. Added cost in design, in production, and in marketing. Some examples are: A guy ordering seats for the factory now has to order 5 different seat types in 3 different colors - 15 different sets of seats! He could be far more productive ordering just one set. The plant has to install sophisticated error proofing equipment. The design Engineers have more combinations to track - and more potential issues to be aware of.

The one possible way they can get around this is to do to some extent what Mini does. Sell popular trim levels but also sell a lot of the items as "Accessories." The difficulty is to do that cost effectively. Want fog lights installed on your mini? That'll be $900 please.

At a minimum, they should understand that customers like to personalize their cars and that they shouldn't do stupid things like integrate the radio into the dash and make it difficult for them to do so.

Whether you like it or not, GM would have option packages if the Camaro came back.

Standard: A/C, heat, power windows, power locks, CD deck with a baisc 4-speaker audio system. Those seem basic enough to me, no reason not to have them.

Optional: NAV system, XM radio, heated seats, alarm system, power adjustable seats, paddle shifter, HUD, OnStar, 10-speaker audio, and obviously the most important option....t-tops.

Oh, and I'd also like to see an option for a digital speedo, aka Berlinetta style. That would be pretty sweet!

For a lineup I'd like to see:

LT: 3800 V6
LS: detuned 5.3L V8 with performance roughly equivalent to an LT1.
Z28: detuned LS2, and high performance suspension.
SS: LS2 with a few additional gizmos to make it faster.

All those cars would come with either a 4spd Auto or a 6spd Manual, except for the V6 which would be auto-only.

I disagree. The 3.8L would most likely be retired in favor of the 3.9L V6. Auto-only for the V6 is also a bit silly - everybody likes manual transmissions, no matter what number of cylinders they have.

Is it also too early for us to start getting 5-speed automatics?

I definately like the idea of a stripper Z28 model. I think the only options should be performance options. Also there could be some GMPP stuff like Carbon Fiber hood, Titanium exhaust, racing seats etc. These could be installed by the dealer. That way people could actually afford to buy a V8 Camaro and could add stuff at their dealer later on.

Re: If and when we get a new Camaro how would you like to see the options lined up?

It would cost you more to get a stripper model then if you were to get a standard base model. The car will be designed for power everything. To "strip" it, would cost more in developing mechanical parts.
I like the idea of dealer-addons but most enthusiasts will do what they want with there own tested parts.
Factory roll bar?
I also expect a 6spd auto to be in all Camaros with 6spd manual option.
I think GM has cut most if not all ties to SLP.

I say look at what options present Chevys have such as remote start will probably be an option on auto cars. I also, 3 levels of sound system.
I would also love to see what they did with the pre-ordering Cobalts happen with the Camaro.

This certainly was a pretty unanimous poll. It looks like people really are in want of that straight performance "true Z28."

The Camaro should at least offer the options that the little brother Cobalt has. Offering a NAV system would be smart. Mustang don't have it, but many of the imports too. If the Camaro is going to be a class leading coupe, it should offer the option.
