Thumbs up If SS is the top dog..SHOULD Z28 replace the 1LE moniker?

back in the day..the SS was the street car with the all the flash and do dads...kinda like todays SS..bad attitude and great style..
now back in the day the Z28 option was for the road course race ready Camaro for the weekend warrior who liked to take his car drive it to the track and drive it back home..and not all flash..
So my question is..the 1LE "race" option on the Camaro, should it be replaced by Z28..like it was before..the SS is still top of the line to the general public.and top dog for flash.but like back then, the ones who wanted the race ready..real KING of the street took the stripped down Camaro..no flash no interior do dads to the max and got the fenders with the Z/28 emblems denoting the optioned Camaro it was..
not a base model but not an SS ,right in the middle like it is now..a Z28..but is faster and more limited production than either...and would make it exclusive like the 1LE is now...
would keep GM happy as offering the SS as top of the line..and Z28 purist that want the Z28 to be top dog..and both can be if its done this way..one in style and one in performance..
limit production to like say 2,000 units..or 1/4of what the SS line is for that year I would think..or something like that..

Stated in the other thread .... the Z28 should be the "Z06" of Camaros.

Its definetly an idea. But I don't get why some people say the Z28 wasn't flashy?? They looked better than the SS's. Stock cowl hood and wide racing stripes is not flashy??

I still think they should can the SS altogether

Do not make it look plain like the 2002 Z28. Do not give it undersize wheels like the 2002 Z28. Do not give it a flat hood. Make it look different than the V6 Cars (But do not make the V6 cars plain, or boring). Do not make it "inferior" in every way to the SS regardless of price differentials.

Z/28 as "Z06" is a great idea, as long as the Z/28 is the more affordable option (unlike in the corvette) and is not penalized aesthetically for not being the "Top Dog".

I still think a "Super Sport" Sports car is redundant and unnecessary.

Yup. Its not needed a car that is blantantly a sports/musclecar like the Camaro or Corvette.

With advent of the SS..... making 1LE hardware standard on Z/28 would have been a good way to differentiate the two cars.

I think the Z06 analogy is absolutely appropriate.

Imagine if the Z/28 had come with 1LE suspension, big brakes, Z06 wheels, real emblems, and in six speed coupe only.

Would this have been the most desirable and collectible 4th gen?

Yes, it would've been a great idea actually. It woulda been a lot better than what they did and given the Z28 a special spot.

Z28 is strictly Camaro and has a better history with it, but the SS has been on so many other cars.

I just wanna say that maybe some of you think us Z28 people don't care about the SS name. I actually hold the name in high regard, with many cars, (real SS's) and I'll bet alot of the others that are for the Z28 name do also. It has been the designation for some of the best cars ever, but not on the Camaro. Z28 is to the Camaro what SS is to the Chevelle, Nova, Impala, MC, and so on. While the name is just 2 plain letters just like LS, LX, and many other letter designations and means SuperSport, (which is a little wierd, Super Sport what??) it has earned a great image for itself. But, when it comes to the Camaro you just have to understand, if you know the cars, Z28 IS THE name that belongs on every top Camaro and has earned a following more than any other SS model ever made, especially in the Camaro line.

It is just a shame that they have been putting SS on FWD V6 and that the 96-02 Camaro SS is a Z28 with a name on it that does not belong there. My friend with a 35th SS is always quick to say that he knows the car is a Z28 and that the window sticker and VIN identify it as a Z28 when I say something about the "SS." He knows that it should have been a 35th Z28 instead because of what that name holds with the car and what SS does not.

I highly agree with all that. 4th gen was the antithesis of variety, distinction, or excitement.

Great idea Caps.

When you really think about it, didn't Z28 start off in the same position (minus it's own engine) as the 1LE?

Lightbulb This is why....

..the fans of the true Z/28 are complaining.......nothing points out the fact that the Z/28 has been regulated to V8 Sport Coupe status more than Chevy having to offer the B4C / 1LE options seperately from the Z/28 ......so in reality, the Z/28 was below the SS and the B4C / 1LE in terms of performance.....sad really....

I'd say that 99% of us here are in agreement that the Z/28 needs to be returned to it's status as a Special Edition, performance model ala the Z06 and let the LT or RS (or some other designation) be the V8 Sport Coupe for the masses....

I guess I need to make my donation to the board and get this as my avatar.... http://www.indycamaro.com/images/z28emblem.bmp
