Houston Auto Show Report

No Camaro or Firebird.

The new Grand Prix is indeed FAR ahead of the current model in terms of interior quality and styling. The controls feel entirely different, though the radio is still a Delco radio.

The new Cavalier is just as boring, cheap, and disappointing as it was before, except that now it has an uglier grille.

The XLR is beautiful in person, as is the SRX. The Cadillac presenter was the best of all of them.

Still no CTS 5-speed models at the show.

The Buick Bengal is nice. There's actually a glass rear spoiler that you can't notice in the photos that kinda changes the look. The Buick Bengal/Cielo/LaCrosse display had a sort of Greek chorus sound to it -- they'd all speak in unisen, and then one would break off to talk about their car or some other feature.

The GTO was fantastic. Great big brakes, and smooth styling. It was not "bland", and the front looks infinitely better in person than it does on the press photographs.

They had the Grand Am and Sunfire GXP show cars here--both looked pretty good.

The BMW Z4 was a great little car. Worlds ahead of the Z3.

New Maxima also looks way better in person than in press photos. It has a strange long slice of glass down the center of the roof about 18" wide that does not open, and is covered with a sunshade. There is apparently no solid-roof option; you can get a sunroof in place of the glass pane roof.

The 350Z is a real winner. Everything felt great about it. Nice stuff clutch pedal, bolstered seats, cool floating gauge panel, and all the controls felt crisp and high quality.

Jaguar had the best display with their own lighting rig and carpet. It had a sort of ice-blue effect and everybody was crowding the area.

The Ford GT (40) is way smaller than I would've thought from the press photos. Not much bigger than the Fiero.

Subaru's cars were kinda neat, but overall you know you're in a $17,000 econobox when you sit in the WRX. The doors take a bit more effort to close and the radio/AC controls were a little clunky.

The Accord's seating was too high, even when adjusted all the way down.

What's with the ratcheting seat adjustor on Minis and Subarus?

The M3 is still my favorite at the show. Everything about the car is absolutely just right. All cars should have such a fine shift feel. I ought to score a test drive at some point.
