According to people close to Mulally, he is looking at selling Volvo despite Ford's repeated statements that it intends to hang on to the brand. He also hopes to kill off the ailing Mercury brand.
Planned, hopes, nothing actually happend... yet.

Mercury will be gone when Ford drops the Panthers. The Grand Marquis was Mercury's only reason to exist.

Just when you think Ford "gets it" they go and make ignorant moves like this.

Gues the anti-Detroit media and fanclub will be happy to see another "stodgy old rust belt" brand put in the ground.

Maercury doesn't need to be around anyway, they have Volvo for euro trash cars, they should keep that, and Lincoln for luxury models. if you want "unique" demographically oriented vehicles, you're not runnign your company right.

OH NO! What will happen to Jill Wagner… She is the only reason to pet Mercury on anyone’s list.

wont happen, all of the platforms we have are volvo platforms or else mazda platforms. Volvo is like the ford r&d/safety department.

By getting rid of Volvo and Mercury it seems to me Ford would be adopting the Toyota model, with one mainline brand (Ford) and one luxury brand (Lincoln). Where is the downside when looking at the success Toyota has with that model?

You won't be able to drive past the Mercury dealer and see the clones of Ford models?
You won't be able to read about how much Mercury sales have dropped over the previous 12 months?

How much better would it be if you could buy an Atoyot Corona at the Lexus dealer that was actually a Camry with a different badge and grille, priced $400 higher?

^ They've already sold Jag.

And yeah Mercury is nothing but a woman-oriented advertising campaign. They could keep Jill Wagner on at Ford and achieve the same effect.

Well if they can sack workers they can bin brands.

It's about restructuring. It's just business.

Good move Ford. Now if only GM could see the light...

A little nicer interior trim. But hey why not just make that nicer trim an option on the Fords?
