I think they misinformed you on the limit part.
There is most definately a $500 limit of earnings per year on the old style card.
You can REDEEM anything you have already earned on any car at any time... but you can only EARN $500 rebate per year.
If this were not the case, the old card would have the benefits of both scenarios (unlimited earnings and unlimited redemptions)....

My parents are lucky enough to have both an old blue and old gold card...BOTH have a $500/yr limit. Believe me...I've been redeeming the damn things when selling cars for over 5 years now!
