Because people have short attention spans. You have to do something that will catch their eye and influence them to watch your whole commercial. After youve got them locked in all they really need to know about a new car is who makes it, what it looks like and the top few most important features. (ie. rwd, v8 350hp for the GTO commercials)

No one pays attention to boring commercials.

To the origional poster, thats an awesome idea and well written. I could picture it in my head as read the story. I think it'd definately build excitement around a new Camaro.

These ideas are all pretty good, but I think what's missing are a few machine guns, helicopters, and explosions.

I was probably bored in the first 10 seconds of the commercial (Couldn't quite make out the black car at night real good next time they should do a gray car in the fog, yes I have seen a car burn out, yes I have seen white smoke billow out of the back wheels, anything new?) and flipped channels/got a beer/blinked. If there were more thought capturing commercials for the GTO then I didn't see them (only watch TV about 10 hours a week).

HAZ-mat said it perfectly: No one pays attention to boring commercials.

They couldn’t make it any more obvious.
There are numerous ways to make the URL more obvious, here are some:

1- GTO.com fills the screen and announcer says ' Go to GTO.com'
2- Announcer just says 'For more visit GTO.com' at the end of the commercial.
3- And my favorite -<joke> Beautiful super model exits the vehicle dressed in a small bathing suit points to GTO.com</joke> (sex sells).
4- Air the commercial like Dodge/Ford/Nissan air their truck commercials (at nausea) and pick one or all of the above methods

The perfect car commercial IMHO would be one that shows the car during the day, from the best/meanest angles. Driving along the California coast, showing off muscle on the track etc... Show me how much fun I am going to have after forking out 30k. Taking jabs at competitors rarely sways me. Look at Dodge's commercials for the Magnum, the plot of the commercials (can't believe I said that) maybe stupid but it shows the car's exterior/interior without blatant camera switches from inside/outside that looses your focus.

A nice shock for a Camaro commercial would be to show the driver (after performing some kind of muscle show off) and that person not be your typical Camaro driver (a 20-30 yr old woman ) that would show the Camaro is not just for the stereotypical speed freaks. If you want to see more Camaros on the road then we need a lot more drivers than the very tiny demographic Camaro currently has.

Wellllll... I'd like to see the camaro get the respect it deserves... But I really wouldn't want it being more popular than the mustang, I guess... because then the Camaro would become "hated" and boring..

My commercial

Starts with empty highway
Chevy muscle cars of all years and styles come rushing by at like 100mph (corvettes and camaros from every generation as well as chevelles and impalas and stuff(maybe some of the new SS models if that makes GM happy))
Cut away to 5th gen under a car cover
AudioSlave Track 6 plays where they say (slow part of the song) "time is wasting".
At this time the cover comes off very fast at first and then very slow motion
As Audioslave jams " Set it off" the 5th Gen burns out and joins the other Chevy muscle cars.
Its back
An American Revolution.
