GTO motor getting tweaks

Automotive News reports that the GTO's LS1 is getting two tweaks.

One will increase low end torque in order to improve 0-60 times.

The other is to revise the exhaust for a more agressive note.

Interestingly...they also say that GM will sell 30,000 GTOs per year...10,000 more than what we were thinking.

Story

I think they should push the for as much as possibleo out of the LS1. The GTO and Corvette will still be plenty different enough cars to stand on their own, with many still wanting a Corvette to say they have one.

Thumbs up

I sure hope it's 30,000 per year, keeps dealer markups at bay (kinda). It's the only car GM makes or is visually in route that I would/could actually buy.

They bring it in at or under $30K, consider it sold!

Its nearly impossible for GM to mess this one up. As long as the car is solid structure wise it'll be a winner. Looking forward to it, no doubt, but my *** wont be able to afford one till like 2008

I'm eager to see the final production version. Sounds like this car will have alot of old world charm, with out any of the drawbacks.

I don't think the GTO LS1 will have any more power than the LS1 I have in my 2k2 Z28. That being said it is an increase in power over the LS1 currently offered in the Monaro. Basicly GM is dropping the LS1 with the improvements made up to the 2003 Vette spec motor. I would expect power ratings to be anywhare from 320-350 hp.

I believe that would violate certain laws, making the GTO a grey market vechicle. If it is not up to Canadian crash safety specs (which it isn't), then it can't be operated here.

Im dissapointed too that the GTO will not be available in Canada.
Of cource, laws are made to be broken! Tell em Ted sent ya!

why don't they build a stroker crank, rods, and pistons to make it into a 383? Would be a nice thing to have in the ls1 parts bin..

The only thing holding back Z28 LS1s is the exhaust & intake. Australia has noise standards that don't exist or are more extreme than here, so I'd imagine opening up the exhaust & getting rid of that intake elbow would go a long way toward that 350hp mark (Lutz's mandate).
