Re: GT500 convertible OVER 2 tons!!!!!!

actually, yes.

i find it odd that Carroll Shelby, of all people, would be enthused about adding weight to the new Mustang.

i haven't seen the R/T article yet, but i have heard talk from the Mustang guys about it. if the GT500 can't have IRS, what does that say about the planned IRS for 2009?

Thumbs up Re: GT500 convertible OVER 2 tons!!!!!!

Seems a bit much.
I wouldn't bet on any weights until production cars start hitting the street.
The current GT weighs 3450 with a 5-speed. I'd expect the GT500 to pick up weight with an iron block (~50-60lb. delta), blower/IC (~50lb. delta over NA setup with no IC), wheels/tires (?) and possibly a few other minor items. Without IRS, IMO it's likely to end up at 3650-3700 when all is said and done. I can't see the 'vert being 300+lb. heavier.
I've seen the "3800" number out there, but who knows how much truth is in that.

R&T says that the iron 5.4, blower, peripherals, trans upgrade, adds 350 lbs.

Definately a fat one. The true definition of a muscle car I suppose.

I saw that. I think in the article, it said the convertable top adds 150 lbs to the car, so that would put the coupe at ~3850. Still heavy, but I think it is the same as the old Cobra.

It might just be me, but I think the Cobra is really ugly. That front end is just terrible. The picture on the front of R&T makes it look even worse.

Honestly, I'll believe that when I see it.

Yep. I generally like the looks of the current Mustang GT, actually. But the double, huge grille openings on the GT500/Shelby version is a bit much, and looks really odd from the front.

4000 lbs is absurd. Makes the GTO, which is a bit heavy for my tastes at 3700-3800 lbs, seem light... (of course, the Mustang will have 50-80 more hp, but still...)

What a fat slob of a car!!! That's just ridiculous...I think it's great that it has so much power, but I'd rather see it be a little less powerful and much lighter.

Convertables have never really been about performance. this will most likely be a fast cruiser, as opposed to coupes traditionally being faster.
I really do like how the hood has a slight bow to it. Those Camaro pics need that.

What i would have said. It's a convertible. Doubt those buying it will mind that much.

Now if the coupe starts creeping into the 2ton range, there'll be serious hell.

Nah, the more they weigh, the easier they'll be to pass!
