GT500 convertible OVER 2 tons!!!!!!
Re: GT500 convertible OVER 2 tons!!!!!!
before everyone goes calling this car a pig.....wait until we see what the f5 will weigh...the govt regs are going to make cars heavier and heavier each year with their "safety" standards

Add in a chassis that's about 100 pounds heavier, another 100 pounds of safety and electronic equptment, and for all we know, a couple dozen pounds in additional engine weight and more in a tougher transmission, and there you go.
If it's any comfort, the hardtop should be at least 150 pounds lighter.

That's simply digusting and unacceptable.....
Re: GT500 convertible OVER 2 tons!!!!!!
That's the price of admission these days.
The only RWD chassis that are cost efficient are based off of larger cars since the world is still FWD for everything else (especially with the "I'm-going-to-die-a-horrible-death-driving-RWD-in-the-winter" people). I'm betting on another round of RWD platforms once everyone is comfortable that RWD still sells & are worth the investment to expand to "mid-sized" sedans.
But don't forget..... these heavy cars still have superior gas mileage and handling of most everything that's lighter today...... let alone their predecessors.

What's everbody making a big deal over? It's a convertible. It would be something if the coupe weighed that much.

Infact, Hau Thai-Tang's exact earlier quote was: "The car should weigh about 3600 pounds, 200 more than a GT"
Seeing as how the Mustang GT is 3,450lbs with the manual, it should figure out to around 3,650lbs if they hold true to the 200lb weight increase.
3,850lbs is 200 more than that, and would be pushing it imo.
The suspension and stuff should be the same as the GT's, just retuned, so where is the 400lb weight increase going to come from? The S/c'd iron blocked 5.4L motor will make up a sizable increase in weight, but no 400lbs. Maybe 200lbs at most i would think over the N/A 4.6 Sohc. This time, there's no IRS to add to the weight.
I hope Thai-Tang sticks to his earlier words and gets the GT500 in at around or under 3,700lbs....preferably at the 3,600lb he was quoted on earlier.
Re: GT500 convertible OVER 2 tons!!!!!!
How long ago was he quoted in saying that? Ever curb weight specification I have seen for the GT500 in recent months have all stated the coupe would be in the 3850lb area.

I just think it's better to be conservative with weight figures on pre-production cars (although GT500 was said to be 90% production ready) and quote a larger/higher figure than to go back on it later on and notice that your quote was much lower. In other words, it's better to quote higher rather than lower if you want to save face.
Judging by that quote, he told the world that the GT500 would be a 3,6XXlb car and 200lbs more than the Mustang GT. No we're hearing 3,850lbs. 200lbs more than the weight he was quoted at. That's a pretty big difference.
Now he's gotta go back on his word it seems if it does infact end up weighing 3,850lbs which to me sounds like a fairly believable figure.
Re: GT500 convertible OVER 2 tons!!!!!!
Engine and drivetrain have to contribute a significant amount. the iron 5.4L V8, the supercharger, and all the assorted piping and coolers.. Don't forget things like the radiator probably has to be increase in capacity, etc.. Trans may ned to be beefed up.. Do they need to add support to the cradle of the heavier and omre powerful drivetrain? joints, driveshaft have to be stronger. 9" rear is going to be heavier. They may have to beef up the control arms and bracing to manage th heavier 9" and substantial increase of power.
Wheels. What kind of wheels? Are they going to be significantly wider and with larger diameter rims? That could be another 10 lbs per wheel too.
Those big brakes are going to add up weight too.. May need stronger mounting points/brakets for extra leverage and stopping powre they can provide... Bigger, heavier rotors and calipers on all 4 corners. May be another 5-10 lbs per each wheel too... They might need to beef up the hubs up front for the added stress of weight, cornering, and braking.. too.. perhaps a few lbs x 2 added there.
I can imagine all the little details added up to more weight than was expected..

The problem is, now when the homeboy in the VTEC Civic pulls up next to the GT500 driver and says "yo, man...that's a mad phat ride, yo," the key problem is that the GT500 driver won't know if the ricer likes the car, or is picking on his 2 ton Mustang.
You too can have the same dilemna for $40k
