I read that earlier today....

Impressive to have 9000 pre-orders for the car.

I hope they can help hold back dealer gouging some.... the car's price point is fantastic, and Pontiac dealers already pissed off a whole bunch of GTO people within the last year and a half or so....

 

Hopefully the Pontiac dealers have learned their lessons from the GTO fiasco.

 

I hope all the people who blame the gouging on GM will read this.

Note that all they can do is ASK, it seems, for the dealers to cooperate. That's why it is called the M.S.R.P. ...

I too hope the bastages learned their lesson with the GTO.

I can almost visualize some of the dealers rationalizing it... "Well, the GTO was a special case 'cause it was a foreign car, so it didn't work. This new Solstice is so hot we'll be able to gouge no problem! Let's just ignore the lesson of the GTO for now..."

 

It's like NASA building space shuttles and handing them over to a bunch of carnival workers to sell them!

Agreed. It's too bad they can't do away with the dealer system entirely. Have demo/service centers, order cars online at a set price, have them delivered to your house. Thanks. I'll take three.

 

FWIW - when I was just car shopping ,all 3 of the pontiac dealers I was at said they will not be adding a charge over sticker and all had a waiting list to get one .

 

I just noticed you live in South Bend. I have a cousin that lives in Mishawaka. One of his sons has a (LS-1) T/A, don't remember what year.
Anyway, you still got that '92 for sale? That thing's gorgeous!

 

I went to a dealership near me and talked to a salesman (I know, probably not the best source for information) and he told me they were getting one Solstice in and were not gonna sell it at all. I assumed that meant they were gonna mark it up to keep it in the showroom to draw traffic. I hope that's not the case, this dealership actually was good with the GTO, they didn't mark any up other than added rims and whatnot. I'm gonna wait and see what they do.

How about that '92?

 

It'd be interesting if GM could do something along the lines of the 'everyone gets employee pricing' promotion. Under the terms of that promotion, if a dealer chose to sell just one car a the promotional price, they had to agree to sell every car at the promotional price. Note that they weren't forced to do anything; they could opt out of the program entirely and sell every car for whatever they could. But if they wanted to sell just one slow-moving Colorado at the GM employee price, then they'd have to agree to sell every red-hot Cobalt SS at the employee price. Presto, no gouging.

Maybe Pontiac/Buick/GMC can run a similar promotion when the Solstice hits the streets. Want to sell a Sierra at $8k off MSRP? Then the Solstice goes out the door at sticker. Don't want to sell a Solstice at sticker? Fine, but then there's no dealer promotion on Sierra and you can watch all your customers go to the Chevy or Ford store.

 

That's a good idea! Hopefully these dealers will realize the situation GM is in right now and help them out. The dealers can definatly make or break this GM right now.

 

Personally I think GM would love to do this. I remember a few years back supposedly GM had bought up all the dealers in a particular market to test this idea. I'm not sure where or exactly when or what happened.
