GM Supplier Discount ???
GM Supplier Discount ???
First let me apologize for putting this in the 5th gen forum. There seems to be a number of insiders here and I thought I might get the quickest response this way.
I posted yesterday about ordering a new Canyon, well today a friend hands me a "GM Supplier Discount" coupon that is good until 3/31/04. Now my order will not even be picked up until tomorrow so I seriously doubt I'll have the car in by 3/31. It states "must take retail delivery by 3/31/04". I guess that means I can't use it for my order?
And, what is this sucker worth in the way of a discount? It has no value printed on it. I could easily cancel my order by tomorrow and use this on an "in stock" Canyon or Colorado I guess.

I personally believe that a good negotiator can walk in off the street and do at least as well as that discount coupon. The supplier discount isn't quite as good as the GM employee programs.

Well, I ordered mine for $100 over invoice (plus that stupid advertising fee factored into the invoice), you don't think I can do better with the coupon?

It's been a while since I've done any of the supplier discounts so I can't recall the exact details. I just remember not being that impressed.
I used the supplier discount with my WS6. I believe it worked out to be 7% off. However, it can be applied with all other incentives, so I used it with the 2002 cash back that GM was offering. Plus, I got a recent grad discount of $400. I ended up getting around 5500 or so off of the car

There IS such a thing as dealer cost, but they aren't going to tell you what that is, and it changes all the time. If they do tell you something that is supposed to be dealer cost, I'll bet they're lying.
Shop the discount around and find out what the dealers say. Work them against each other. Since I get GMS, I don't use the supplier discount and don't have to shop anything other than service - on GMS the price is the same regardless of dealer.
I think you are a bit mixed up...here is how GM pricing goes..
GMS= GM Employee Discount. GMS stands for "GM Stock" and is on average 5%ish below dealer invoice. GM gives the dealer a kickback for selling at this price to cover the loss.
GM Supplier Price= What GM contractors and suppliers pay. This is typically GMS+4%. On most cars it works out to at least a few hundred below invoice....with the difference depending on how expensive the car you buy is. The certificate you described is called a GM In the Driveway certificate. You can find more info at www.gminthedriveway.com . Basically employess can give them out to friends so they can buy at supplier price. Here are some pricing examples on GM Supplier Price...

Also there is a $250 rebate for buying at the supplier price....be warned. some dealers won't tell you this and try to pocket the $$$.
I used a GM in the Driveway certificate to buy my Grand Prix and actually still have a spare laying round I got for a freind who decided not to buy. Kinda sucks to go to waste, has to be used by 3/31.

Branden, thanks that is exactly what I needed to know! Yes, the certificate I have is a "GM in the Driveway". So, I should be able to buy for slightly below invoice and still get a $250 rebate PLUS the current incentive?

GM sets MSRP, they set the incentives, they have a given amount they're going to charge the dealer for the car. Apart from that, nothing really exists. "Invoice" is a bargaining tool used by the dealers and nothing more.
A dealer will NEVER tell you what he actually paid (or more correctly, is currently paying) for the car.
I got the "invoice" from a number of dealers and they all matched what Edmunds.com listed to the penny. I think we all know that there is no true "invoice" number because of all the games played behind the scene but it is a good to know when trying to get the best deal.
There is an invoice. It is what the dealer pays for the car when they recieve the vehicle. The dealer then recieves the holdback, which is usually 5% of MSRP, when they drop the sales card. If you've ever seen an invoice, it actually has the holdback on there as well.
There is also dealer incentives on some hard to sell models that varies region to region and model to model. Chevy doesn't use this 'dealer cash' very often. I think more on the luxury end of the spectrum this is used (Caddy and Lincoln have it alot).
I'm sure there are some un-scrupuless dealers out there that fabricate an invoice to make it look as if they have more in the car than they actually do.

Rather than make a new thread I thought I'd dig this one back up.
Recently during some of my car shopping I considered getting a Solstice or Sky, but the dealers I contacted locally wouldn't offer GM Supplier discount on them.
Anyone know why not?
