Why do people think this?
I heard the same about the 240SX from some of the unwashed masses in the Nissan community, before it died an undeserved death. Before it was such a big drifting hit, many referred to it as a "2-door Altima". WTF?!
Obviously, nothing could have been further from the truth.
Likewise, a rear-wheel drive 2-door Camaro at less than 3200 lb. would NOT be a "Cobalt coupe".
Unless you drive at less than 3/10ths all the time. In which case a 2-door Caprice would seem to be more appropriate anyway.

Again, before the herd here goes into it's depressive, GM-slamming stampede, we might want to see what happens with our own eyes first. We might be pretty pleased.

It's to create a series of vehicles using a modular platform.
Australia's used one structure as a jump off point, and since Mark Reuss already spilled the beans, we are using Sigma.
Sigma has already shown itself to be highly adaptable. One chassis, and you have the CTS, STS, and a crossover SUV. Different sizes. Same chassis & components. 2 widths. One AWD capable (STS & crossover) and one not (CTS).
Makes sense to make one width on a "budget" version of that chassis since it costs alot more to make a chassis various widths than it is to lengthen it... or shorten it.

But my post was in response to this quote from the story: "A large sporty coupe for Chevrolet is also in the works. Outside sources say that car could resurrect the Camaro name."

Just a suggestion.
Just a suggestion.
you could take action.....
Because if you wait for the train to hit you.....and you happen not to like it.....it will at that point..... be too late.

Yeah, I suppose. I guess if you're in a railroad tunnel, sitting on the tracks...and see the headlights of an oncoming train ....maybe you could just wait, and hope the impact won't be too bad. Maybe it won't hurt. Maybe I won't get splattered. Or.......

Re: GM plans rear-drive family
In regards to the 3rd gen vs. 4th gen handling, you've got to look at it in context...
3rd Gen compared to other 80's cars > 4th Gen compared to other 90's cars
...even though the 4th was better than the 3rd in many ways...

But we all know how accurate thosewould be.

....as opposed to listening to someone saying that the train won't be there for another hour, then another person saying the train came yesterday so it won't be here today, and then another person who says the train comes only every 3rd hour on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, and then yet another who says....

Zero.
A 2+2 RWD coupe and a RWD replacement for the Monte Carlo?
By 2010, I'd say a pretty good to darn good chance.

Again, time will tell.
