Re: GM large car discussion

Good luck to you...was just watching the noontime news. Wow

Let me re-iterate what someone said above...my mother has a $39k, '03 Explorer V8 Limited. Gas could DOUBLE in cost before she'd think about switching. She's a boomer with a ton of $$$ (thanks to my dad )...what the hell does she care?

Struggling families will not buy them in the numbers they used to, and the resale will start to decline more because those same struggling families who typically buy used will ignore them more and more. But there will be an SUV market for a long, long time...

I thought Katrina knocked out 25% of capacity when it came through. So is the Rita 25% after Katrina or before??

I'm all for a nice Chevy muscle sedan. By all means. But you still need volume sales.
Kinda makes a business type point for a Bel Air or something doesnt it? Keep the volume Impala (which are great cars, btw), keep the smaller Malibu, and offer a big 4-door RWD V8 sedan with all sorts of available options... hell maybe even try a full size 2 door!

Exactly.

This is the best scenario, IMO, and as others have already confirmed or given "the winkie " to.... it should happen like that as the next few years unfold.

I find it odd that gas is cheaper now than it was before Katrina, even thought the gulf oil operations got hit, and never did come back up fully. Hmmm

I saw on the news that people stoped buying unnecessary gas. Demand went down.

If the refineries on the TX coast get severe damage, we'll likely see $5.00 a gallon for a while.

The US just does not have rerfineries sufficient to hold down costs or weather this kind of storm packed season.

If you map the refineries and platforms, you'll see the possible problems post the weekend.

I know that people who can afford a 40K SUV have a little money laying around but if they are driving a 2003 model the price of filling up has just about doubled since they bought the vehicle. $1.50 vs $2.50+

The media outlets have been talking about the sagging sales and droping resale valve of large SUV's. I think its down 10% over the same time last year. Anyone else think that Large SUV sales slide to 50% of the previous highs? I think there wll be a large move to the large car market. Is GM gonna miss the boat like they are on the sold out hybrid market?

BTW diesel is 2.79-2.85 here. I think I am gonna start the 6 cylinder duramax for the 1/2 truck suv market petition.
SUV sales have slid, but they are still the largest slice of the market, and are still something of cash cows for the big 3.

Chevy and Ford have seen drops, but the Hemi powered Durango is still selling strong. So is Escalade last I heard. That covers both the upper and lower ends of SUV-dom.

Toyota has seen a drop in their large SUV sales, as well. I personally regard that as the doomsday scenario for the segment, since it's then a bit more difficult to blame one's own outdated model for lackluster sales performance as GM has been trying to do.

Could be. However, Toyota's Land Cruiser and Sequoia are not exactly spring chickens. They are pretty long in the tooth as well...

Re: GM large car discussion

I aerospace education has me to believe that Rita is gonna fall apart very quickly. I dont think there will be too much damage. Katrina kinda shocked us into thinking that hurricanes are super nasty devestruction machines, but the vast majority of them fall apart just before landfall. Rita will, but Katrina sure didn't.

I see a move to the Midsize SUV/Fullsize car market. Good thing GM has 148 vehicles spun off the GMT 360. I am not entailing that the large SUV market is dead, its just seen its heyday and its all downhill from here. I am wondering what GM is gonna do with all that production.

BTW I was really disappointed when the trailblazer came out and car and driver and motor trend got 15-16mpg out of them. What have you guys seen? I shouldn't expect much they only weigh 500lbs less than the tahoe.

Its supposed to be a catagory 4 (same as Katrina) when it makes land fall. I am on the clean side. (was supposed to get the eye or close to on the dirty side.) Still, I am supposed to see sustined 100 mph winds for 12 hrs. and im 65 plus miles inland from galveston and 45 from the Houston bay area.

Only time will tell which of us is right and which of us is wrong.

......was listening to T. Lundberg last week. Seems that gas in 1981 cost the equivalent of $3.58 cents a gallon based on price indices. And.....as of last week, gas nationally was still south of $3. a gallon.

Re: GM large car discussion

There have been gas price hikes and shortages before, and gas has always gone back down to cheaper levels. In the 70's and early 80's, gas prices were ridiculous, ans look at the 90's- cheap gas everywhere. What makes you guys think the same thing won't happen again?
